I worked hand-in-hand with the company owner to co-manage 17-person fully distributed boutique software development and design agency. I developed and helped sell cross-functional teams of product managers, designers, developers and researchers working in tandem, that differed from our usual staff augmentation business. I also managed key client relationship, doubling the size of one account. I personally led a multi-year $3m engagement to build a set of related products for a client. I led the engineering staff of experienced Ruby on Rails and front-end developers, mentoring and growing them professionally. Finally, I instigated and co-created an internal “board of directors” as a novel form of governance for the company, giving staff a say in the running of the business.

Responsible for all aspects of the development and operations of the technical products of a healthcare software startup with almost $10m in funding.Grew engineering team from 2 to 16, including operations and developers. This team was a fully-remote team built carefully with the values of inclusivity in mind. We used the programming languages Clojure and Ruby along with a wide variety of AWS services to deliver value.The team I led built a rules-engine based platform to perform clinical decision-making automation. Using AWS Step Functions, S3 and AWS ECS/Fargate to build a dynamic platform for our many integrations. We built, designed or evolved integrations across several Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems used by our customers, including Epic, Athena, Allscripts and Cerner. Personally built a security program which supported a HITRUST certification in 2018, working carefully with our Compliance department and Operations SVP.

I was invited to a leadership position within the newly formed Product and Customer Experience organization, peer to several General Managers leading our online business units. I created a unified Product Management organization from diverse parts (former Ecommerce, Program, Product organizations). I spearheaded an integrated product strategy initiative to unify diverse SKUs and customer experiences across multiple businesses.

At Getty Images, I managed an application development organization of nearly 200 people, including engineers, product owners, and testers across 6 offices and 4 countries. During a time of great change at the company, I helped to introduce a more open and dynamic development culture, encouraging experimentation in technologies and practices that led to 30% greater productivity, several successful technical projects, and 2 major integrations incorporating hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue. I built new capabilities in the areas of mobile development, public APIs, and search. I partnered effectively with the PMO, Ecommerce, Product, Marketing, Sales and Technical Services, and eventually was recruited internally to join the Product organization.

My team's members were the only people (of 60+) retained after Getty acquired my previous employer. We found ourselves at the cutting edge of Getty's new SOA strategy, migrating our newly developed Ruby on Rails platform to rely on web services our parent company had implemented in C#. In the process we completely internationalized our codebase and deployed sites in two additional languages for a worldwide clientéle. All technical aspects of the development, deployment, quality assurance, and operational support for this effort was ultimately my responsibility. I worked closely with product management and senior architecture staff at headquarters and a sales team located in Chicago.I also took on operational responsibility for our facilities, including managing a move to a smaller set of offices in Madison.

In this position, I reported directly to the company President.I was responsible for the development, QA and ongoing support of new features on our flagship sites. During this time we converted an aged Java framework to a Ruby on Rails platform, to decrease time-to-market.I managed the operations of our image ingestion process, which processed over 200k images a month, growing from less than 10 to over 25 Tb of storage over my tenure. I managed the vocabulary development and indexing process for our house-branded imagery, Uppercut. During this time I also prepared $1.6 million budget.These responsibilities also me in daily contact with our sales and operations teams.

I conceived, evangelized, and led the development of an innovative search experience on Punchstock's flagship site. The project was completed on time and was widely imitated in the industry. The development process included development of a proprietary 'controlled vocabulary' along with the software to maintain it and apply it automatically to images sold on the site.

I had one two year contract while a consultant for Smart Solutions, which was with the State of Wisconsin's Department of Electronic Government. I worked with a world-class Java development team to improve the user experience on the State's web application portal. I also designed a content management system for local governments and maintained the state-wide search engine (Inktomi).
