I am a skilled and passionate agroecologist with over 30 years of consultancy, advisory, lecturing, facilitation and mentoring experience across all main UK farming sectors, upland and lowland, and the diverse range of environmental/social/business/food system issues.As an educator I am confident supporting small and larger groups, and working with mixed age profiles, backgrounds and motivations. I aim to inspire, offer hope and encourage the sharing of insight and knowledge between participants. I allow time to explore problems and opportunities, to reflect, and to plan next steps. I founded and co-direct a new and diverse network of young people (18 - 35) working together to build an agroecological food system and regenerative future.Our mission is to ENABLE young people to share knowledge, resources, skills, opportunity, and inspiration. We celebrate successes and ENCOURAGE each other to create or engage in activity that has impact. We EMPOWER our diverse community to build an agroecological food system and regenerative future.We are growing into a fully fledged CIC in 2024.

The Cotswolds

I am tenant and manager of a 73ha organic, agroecological and regenerative farm in the Cotswolds working with my wife, Mel. As tenants of the National Trust on the Sherborne Park Estate we aim to produce nutritious food, healthy soil and a thriving diverse environment with particular focus on traditional breed cattle (Original Population Herefords), sheep (Cotswolds), farmland birds, woodland creation and species rich grassland. We sell 'pasture fed' beef, lamb and pork directly to the consumer via our thriving pop-up farm shop alongside our own honey and organic salad/veg (grown in our 2.5 acre market garden - a joint venture with a young grower @cotswoldmarketgarden), plus other products from local food heroes. We run a small DIY livery enterprise and offer farm educational visits to local schools, colleges and interest groups. We also offer bespoke tipi weddings and gatherings in our wildflower meadows via our farm based events business, Cotswolds Under Canvas. My role on the farm involves all aspects of farm management including business planning and accounting, scheme and compliance administration, livestock duties, arable cultivation, grassland management, education/knowledge exchange, tourism and event management, and meat marketing/shop development.We won the National Trust 'Farming with Nature' Award in 2017 for our work at Conygree and across the sector. We have also won a number of NT Fine Farm Produce Awards (2012 - 2019) for our beef, lamb and hogget.

FarmED is the unique and award winning Centre for Farm and Food Education, in the Cotswolds, UK. It's a demonstration farm and a destination, and place to talk and collaborate. FarmED is a purpose driven not for profit organisation, officially opened in 2021, by King Charles. The FarmED mission is to provide learning spaces and knowledge exchange events that inspire, educate and connect people to build sustainable farming and food systems that nourish people and regenerate the planet. The aim is to be at the heart of local, regional and global agroecological transition.FarmED provides an inspiring platform for a diverse range of audiences from school children and students, to farmers, advisers, rural entrepreneurs, food buyers, policy makers, financiers and NGOs. Initially as General Manager I led the development of the FarmED vision, funding bids, team recruitment and year one start up activities. My role then grew into Head of Sustainable Farming and Food Systems focussing on the FarmED knowledge exchange programme, partnership development, consultancy, research and outreach. I developed and helped run the pioneering GREAT Project (2021 - 2024) in Gloucestershire promoting regenerative farming and food transition via evidence build, knowledge exchange and the nurturing of new enterprises. I was also a founder member and co-chair of the North East Cotswolds Farmer Cluster Group, helping to lead its formation and launch. I led the development of the Emergent Generation in 2022/23 - a movement for young regenerative thinkers and agroecological practitioners. I am working to build this network further in 2023/24. FarmEDs impact and reach to date has been considerable, engaging and influencing over 25000 people in 2022/23. After four wonderful years I stepped back from my lead role in July 2023 to focus on my own farming business, consultancy and education work but I still help at FarmED from time to time.

Cirencester - Gloucestershire

I joined the Royal Agricultural University (School of Business and Entrepreneurship) in Cirencester as a Senior Lecturer in Farm Business Management in 2014. My main subject areas were farm business management, agricultural marketing, rural enterprise/diversification, rural tourism, event management, agri-tourism and sustainable agriculture. My role included teaching (from foundation degree to postgraduate level), course development, research, training and consultancy. I was the Programme Manager for the MSc in Business Management and MSc in Rural Tourism Management (which I designed, validated and ran). I also taught on the SDAU programme in China. I aim to inspire the farmers, land managers and rural entrepreneurs of tomorrow, balancing food production and environmental management.

Cirencester - Gloucestershire

The Pasture-Fed Livestock Association (PFLA) is a farmer led CIC based at the RAU in Cirencester that aims to promote, assure and engage British farmers committed to producing high quality beef, lamb and dairy produce from diverse grass-fed and pasture based systems. The 'pasture for life' ethos has proven animal welfare, agro-ecological, environmental and human health benefits. As a farmer member and Director I was involved in organisational strategy, governance and outreach/promotion via evidence gathering and knowledge exchange. I co-authored the Pasture for Life - It Can Be Done booklet which highlighted the economic case for rearing ruminants on pasture. I am committed to seeking a more sustainable and regenerative food system for all, and I continue to support the PFLA.

Cumulus Consultants is a specialist rural consultancy working in the land and environment sector offering support and advice to farmers, landowners, rural businesses, government and NGOs. Cumulus takes knowledge and understanding of the rural economy and rural policy, and combines this with practical experience of farming, conservation, land management and rural business. Clumber Park - Nottinghamshire

As Agricultural Adviser for the National Trust I had territory management responsibility for my Farm & Countryside Advisory team including delivery of internal/external training events and technical support, policy development, partner liaison and management of the NTs whole farm planning programme.I represented the Trust on DEFRA agri-environment steering groups and the Upland Land Management Advisory Panel at national level, and was responsible for developing the NT Environmental Standards for Farms and joint coordination of the first Single Payment Scheme application in 2005 on 21,000ha.I started my career with the National Trust covering the East Midlands region, including the key Peak District properties. My initial role included:• Writing and implementing whole farm and estate plans with farm tenants• Farm building and waste system design• Managing agri-environment grant applications and projectsI was promoted to a territory/head office role in 2002.

Bakewell

I helped lead this EU funded project linking food, farming and rural enterprise, delivering farm advisory visits, whole farm reports and funding packages with the aim of stimulating more viable and sustainable businesses in the National Park.

Lincolnshire

I cut my teeth in the sector as Farm Conservation Adviser for FWAG. I gave farm conservation advice to Lincolnshire farmers, wrote whole farm plans and applied for Countryside Stewardship Scheme grants for clients. I also worked at national level developing the Landwise and Farm Biodiversity Action Plan approach. I was the top income generating adviser in 1997.

Building A Sustainable Farm Business

I was honoured to be awarded a Nuffield Farming Scholarship in 2015 co-sponsored by the National Trust. It allowed me to travel the world.
