About Jonathan Allen

Jonathan C. Allen (jscallen@gmail.com)I am currently a part-time Engineering Consultant for Global Coral Reef Alliance and Bikes Not Bombs, both key to the sustainability of Earth. The first, for restoring ocean biodiversity and sequestering CO2, the second, for getting people to where they need to go environmentally,Previously, the chief electrical engineer for astrophysics research at MIT/LIGO (the world's most sensitive gravitometer) as well as a commercial product design engineer for consumer and industrial markets (5 US Patents). I boosted the LIGO signal-to-noise ratio by 15dB, revealing 2 black hole in-spirals in 2015, a 3rd in 2016, and additional events each year. These were acknowledged as being the first proofs of Einstein's theorized gravity waves and made possible by my enhancements to the LIGO installations. My electronic designs have been focused on low noise instrumentation, audio, power and controls from DC(0) through 3GHz for wired, fiber optic to wireless applications. The systems designed ranged from $50 retail audio products (dBx) to multi-million dollar observatories (LIGO). Designs contributed to included the most stable magnetometer (ADE X-9), the most robust phone system (DYMEC NEMP hardened Red Phone), the most stable actively damped aircraft tail (ACX / F-18/ V-tail) and the most dynamic digital audio recorder (dBx Model 700).My education is a continual process, with both courses and seminars keeping me up to date and expanding my horizons. My most recent courses include the Bose Institute graduate-level class (MIT#6.312), Acoustics of Rooms and Enclosures. I also consult, mentor, tutor, audit seminars, do sound reinforcement & recording, and volunteer for worthy causes. My specialties: Instrumentation, Noise Remediation, Audio, Video, Graphics, Linear, power, and mixed-signal circuit design, with a strong focus on DFx techniques for mfg., test, EMC, safety and international compliance. Mechanical engineering- mostly bicycle maintenance and repair with some automotive.Possible Alternate Spellings:Jon, John, Johnathan, Johnathon, Jonothan, Jonathon, Jonothon, Allan, Alan, Alen, Alain, Allain, Allyn, Alyn

Listed skills include Electrical Engineering, Systems Design, Design For Manufacturing, Electronics, and 26 others.

Blood Sample Monitor Designer

Charybdis Consulting

Jonathan C. Allen (jcallen@ieee.org)A blood cell and hemolysis monitor with a low cost PCB and laptop software.Abstract:Functional Red Blood Cells (RBCs) exhibit flexibility and nanoscale vibrations at around 1,000 cycles per second. When they are compromised by Sickle – cell or Malarial infections, they can not only change both size and shape, but loose flexibility and consequently these vibrations. The aim of this project is to construct and to evaluate the feasibility of a low cost resonant, dual gapped inductor probe for monitoring the health of RBCs in a small blood sample. Since hemoglobin has iron, it interacts with magnetic fields, increasing the magnetic permeability of the blood. The 1kHz vibrations of flexible cells produce inductance variations as the distance between the cells iron and the inductor gap is modulated. By operating just below resonance, a very high gain on minute changes in the inductance (caused by the passing iron) is attained. This inductor is constructed in 2 parts: a PCB gapped core inductor with a microgap MEMs block inserted inside the PCB gap with a microchannel for the passage of the blood. This construction allows for a highly tapered gap small enough to interact with RBCs one at a time as they sink through the microchannel. The inductor voltage is returned for acquisition by a low noise microphone input on a PC. Analysis is done by a simple software routine for identification and counting the number of cells of each type that sink past the sensor, as well as the background increase from hemolysis (serum hemoglobin from damaged red blood cells). The largest excursions are produced by the spherical malarial cells, followed by the medium excursions of the normal cells, and the Sickle cells produce excursions that are a fraction of a normal cell. Excursions that include a 1kHz added ripple are produced by flexible cells, either normal or Malarial from the less aggressive form of Malaria. This is shared with research at MIT.

Oct 2005 - Jan 2009

Electronics Engineer

Mit/Ligo Laboratory

Design of Electronic Controls and Instrumentation for upgrades on the world's most sensitive vibration detector, the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatories (LIGO) located at Hanford, WA and Livingston, LA. I redesigned an ultra low noise phase detector for 10dB lower noise, and combined with many of my cabling, shielding and grounding upgrades for 5dB lower noise, we got the system noise floor from 10exp-23 to 10exp-24 meter (one tenth of the radius of a proton). In September and December of 2015, both observatories were online and detected 2 black hole in-spirals, 1.2 and 1.4 billion light years distant, and in February of 2016, the data had been analysed enough to verify Einstein's theory of gravity waves, as well as sort through the best models for black hole behavior. Proving Einstein's theory for the first time in over 100 years was the most gratifying event of my career, since the SNR of these detections was 12dB and 8dB, neither of which would have been seen without my 15dB of noise reduction.
