I am a historical ecologist and science communicator, National Geographic Explorer, Swire Scholar, Smithsonian Fellow, and TedX Speaker. I currently work as an Earl S. Tupper postdoctoral fellow at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) in Panama in collaboration with Dr. Aaron O'Dea's tropical ecology laboratory and Dr. Ashely Sharpe. I am also an affiliated researcher at The University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography in Dr. Kelton McMahon's Ocean Ecogeochemistry lab.My current research focuses on the story of Panamá and Hong Kong's coral reef ecosystems - what they were like in the past, how they have grown and changed into their present state, and what this might mean for their persistence into the future. I use a combination of historical research, archaeology, ecology, geology, and biogeochemical methods in order to understand and communicate the story of these ecosystems through time.Through my science communication and storytelling, I hope to accomplish one main goal: to humanize science and those who practice it, to foster its understanding and appreciation for all.
