About Jonathan Dain

I am a research-based scientist with a BS in Cellular and Molecular Biology. I have a diverse array of expertise dealing with organismal biology with a large emphasis on herpetology. I have had prior work with Rana muscosa, Phrynosoma mcallii, Crotalus creates, and a myriad of other species. My research interest includes the development of the microbiome of amphibians as a method with which chytrid resistance might be amplified. I am seeking a challenging position that will allow me to learn and hone my skills as a biologist and broaden my taxonomy list. Currently, I am starting a Ph.D program at UMASS Boston in Environmental Biology. Working in the lab of Dr. Hill I will be studying the expansion, ecology, and virulence of the HPAI5 Avian influenza virus.

I work as a lab technician. I performed general laboratory maintenance and organization as well as calibration of the equipment. I also assisted with experiments using API and assays for hygroscopicity, density, dissolved oxygen, and leachable studies.
  • San Diego Natural History Museum
    Field Biologist
San Diego Natural History Museum May 2020 - Jul 2020
I worked as part of a field biology research study on the flat-tailed horned lizard (Phrynosoma mcallii). We were monitoring the species and its population via demographic and observational studies. We would perform "plot-walks" searching for this species in a given area to determine occupation. Once an individual was found we would take SVL and weight measurements as well as sex, time of day, and weather information. For the Demographic studies, we would monitor a given plot for a week and track the movement of the lizards found there as well as getting data on every lizard in the area.
  • San Diego State University
    Phylogenetics Lab Assistant
San Diego State University Sep 2017 - May 2020
    • Responsible for the data input and analysis of hand recorded field data by Laurence Klauber on rattlesnakes, as well as data collection from preserved museum specimens. • Participation in weekly lab meetings, discussing current research in Herpetology and Biodiversity Biology.• Genomic data acquisition and analysis (DNA extractions, RADseq library preparation, bioinformatics, and evolutionary analysis).• Used R for advanced statistical analysis of Crotalus cerastes morphology.• Presented a poster of morphological multivariate statistical analysis of Crotalus cerastes at the Joint Meeting of Ichthyology and Herpetology 2019, Snowbird, Utah.
  • San Diego Zoo Safari Park
    Summer Research Fellowship
San Diego Zoo Safari Park Jun 2018 - Aug 2018
    Escondido, California, United States
I worked as a researcher in the recovery ecology division at the Institute of Conservation Research at the Safari Park. While there I studied the probiotic bath interaction with the endangered Mountain Yellow-legged Frog and developed a project to assess the longevity of the probiotics on the skin surface of the frog. I developed non-PCR methods of confirming a colonization event and sampling its longevity. My research led to changes in the protocol to better allow for the benefit of the probiotic and increased survival. While there I also learned many field biology and laboratory techniques, such as: drawing blood via capillary tubes, pit tagging, visual identification elastomeric tag insertion, chytrid swabbing, and ranavirus tests.
