About Jonathan Lowry
Studying Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at the University of Michigan (U of M), I value collaborative community, enjoy experiencing the natural beauty of our world, and savor problem solving.Growing up in Holland, MI, USA with summers spent in Lake Michigan, I have loved water from the outset. From watching the bow of boats as they cut through waves to sitting on South Manitou Island’s Gull Point, entranced as waves dance and collide, I have developed a passion for understanding fluid flow.While at U of M, I have been engaged in classes and lead the UM Electric Boat project team (UMEB) in multiple capacities, first as a hydrofoil subteam lead and then as the Mechanical Director. In my various roles on UMEB, I designed, built, and tested foil control surfaces, verified hydrostatics, and managed launch testing of a 500 kg hydrofoiling Electric Boat.Since moving to Ann Arbor, I have also picked up a love of white water kayaking with the UM Whitewater Kayak club. Getting in a boat and paddling on whichever river the weekend has in store been a great way to spend time outside and on the water.While not in Ann Arbor, some family members and I are endeavoring to visit every US National Park by 2031. I am finding that with each park I feel a deeper passion for the Earth we have now, the Earth we leave for future generations, and the importance of being grateful for the moments we share as we are.In short, I am engaged by obstacles, energized by community, and driven by the beauty of nature.
