As the Covid pandemic began closing down the world for lockdowns and decimating many industries, I stumbled into an unexpected opportunity through a friend of a friend. He referred me to the executive director of a memory care facility. After a lengthy initial interview, I was hired with the intention of moving me around different areas to learn the business and identify where I would best fit. My initial placement, a split position between Life Enrichment and Concierge, turned out to be ideal, allowing me to exercise my program development and group facilitation in working with the residents and supportive services and advocacy experience in working with our residents' families. I immediately fell in love with our residents and realized that the work we do is much more than just elder care. We aim to ensure that people living with advanced progressive dementia maintain a sense of dignity as their disease ravages their mind, stripping them of memory and the ability to perform basic activities of daily living. I discovered that my body of work up to this point had afforded me a specific set of skills that aid me in meeting our special population where they are and help them to navigate the constantly changing circumstances in which they find themselves, and to get into their complicated minds and puzzle together the often mysterious motivation for some behaviors and expressions. My experience in various health and disease-specific fields has informed my support of our families.
