I was appointed editor in 2009. The IC celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2010. We relaunched the website in 2011.
I joined Investors Chronicle in April 2000 as the publication was in the throes of a big website launch. Like many others at the time, the business plan for this site was over-optimistic and very soon it was forced to retrench. I dealt with this by pushing for the merger of the print and online editorial teams, an approach that was later adopted by the Financial Times (owner of the IC). For three years, I wrote for the magazine and ran the website. In 2006, I moved to full-time website work and in 2007 oversaw the relaunch of the site and the migration of a 30-strong newsroom to a xml-based content management system.
After my time in the USA (see below) I moved to Asia for personal reasons, as well as to move into more mainstream journalism. After eight months on the Asian editing desk at AFX Asia (at that time, owned jointly by Agence-France Presse, the Financial Times and Nikkei), I moved into the Hong Kong bureau, where I covered general economic and corporate news, the handover of Hong Kong to China and the 1997 IMF/World Bank and G7 meetings. In late 1998, I returned to the UK and spent a year working on AFX's London subediting desk.
I joined this UK-based group of trade publications straight from university in 1993, on a six-month maternity cover contract. Before that contract ended, I was sent to the group's New York office and within 18 months, I was North American editor responsible for all non-steel coverage in North America. I also travelled extensively within North America, and chaired, addressed and organised metals industry gatherings.
