About Jonathan Cope, Phd

I am a postdoctoral scientist with over 5 years of experience in cell biology and biochemistry research. My research focuses on deciphering the complex interactions of proteins within intracellular signaling pathways and how these interactions drive the regulation of key cellular processes. My PhD work uncovered a novel function for the Nance-Horan Syndrome-like 1 protein in the clathrin-independent, fast endophilin-mediated endocytosis pathway.

Mrc Dtp Phd Student

My project investigated the role of the Nance-Horan Syndrome (NHS) protein family in fast endophilin-mediated endocytosis and breast cancer cell migration. I employed a combination of molecular biology, bioinformatic and biochemical techniques to characterise novel binding partners of the proteins NHSL1 and NHSL2.I generated NHSL1 knock-out breast cancer cell lines using CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing.I used these cells in different microscopy-based functional assays to assess the role of NHSL1 in endocytosis and breast cancer cell migration.I supervised undergraduate lab members, providing training in experimental design and laboratory techniques.

Graduate Teaching Assistant

I assisted lecturers in laboratory-based practical sessions and workshops for undergraduate students.I also independently ran biochemistry tutorials for first-year medical students.

Oct 2021 - Sep 2023

Summer Vacation Studentship

York, England, United Kingdom

I undertook an 8-week research project in the Evans lab, focusing on characterising the interaction of N2-src with Sec23A and its effect on COPII transport. During this studentship, I was trained in a variety of cellular and molecular biology techniques including: Cell culture & transfection, immunocytochemistry, western blotting and gene cloning. I attended the 2018 North of England Cell Biology Forum in Huddersfield with members of the lab.
