I am a Ph.D. research scientist focused on improving human health by precisely targeting cancer and immune system cells. My training has focused on cancer biology, immunology, chemistry, and computational biology.I lead a scientific team at Vanderbilt University that performs independent research and collaborates with others to create new tools for research and precision medicine (https://my.vanderbilt.edu/irishlab). Our approach focuses on tracking and targeting rare cells within complex, interacting populations and emphasizes the study of human tissue cells directly out of the body (ex vivo). My group also develops computational tools to automatically discover and characterize rare cells in human tissues. This is a form of "cytomics" (the study of all the cells in a system), and we are working to build tools that will enable automatic machine learning of cell identity. Some of our tools in this area include MEM (Diggins et al., Nature Methods 2017, https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28135256), RAPID (Leelatian, Sinnaeve et al., eLife 2020 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7340505/), and T-REX (Barone, Paul, Muehling et al., eLife 2021 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8370768/).I was also a co-founder of Cytobank Inc., the first cytometry cloud computing platform and now a leading software solution for single cell data science (http://www.cytobank.org/). I was with Cytobank from founding to acquisition in June 2019 (and remain an avid user and enthusiast).Great potential exists to tailor a patient’s therapy to the biological alterations in the cells of their disease and to directly monitor the impact of treatments on cancer and immune system cells. However, approaches that cannot see single cells or that only measure a handful of cellular features have not been enough. To achieve our goals and improve human health, it is critical to create and apply new tools that reveal all the cells in a sample and that comprehensively characterize all critical biomarkers.
