Career Background: After attending a music camp hosted by the GRAMMY Foundation in Los Angeles, encouragement quickly led to the pursuit of higher education in professional music. Traveling East to Boston to earn a degree in Music Business from Berklee College of Music, it was only shortly after leaving Boston and returning to LA that an audition to perform at sea presented itself. Performing in Holland America Line's entertainment department sparked a 6-year career in the cruise industry as a sideman, headliner, and featured multi-instrumentalist. Towards the final 2-years of traveling and performing, deeper interest and passion in musical composition and orchestration began to develop - focusing on film score composers such as John Williams, James Horner, Patrick Doyle, Alan Silvestri, and Danny Elfman to name a few.Returning to Chicago and concluding years of touring and intercontinental travel, 2017 evolved into a one-year stay in LA. While on the West Coast, private classes in film score orchestration along with a few scattered big band jazz ensembles and musical theater productions helped maintain skill and balance while settling "on land."Now based in the Chicagoland area, musical theater productions [particularly for SATB saxes, clarinet, bass clarinet, and flute] have become a significant centerpiece - allowing for the greatest applications of an extensive woodwind collection.Past private lesson experiences involved training beginner level saxophonists in reading music notation with expression and mindful emphasis on tonal awareness and pitch control. Utilizing duets allows the student to play along with a stable sound source, diverting attention directly to blending sound, matching pitch, developing dynamic expression, and establishing within the aspiring musician the internal mastery of time & rhythm.
The Quantum Of The Seas
In 2014, an opportunity arose to take the helm as a featured multi-instrumentalist on Royal Caribbean's newest "flagship," leading a brand new original production show created around unique, one-of-a-kind instrumental inventions and designs. This production presented the special challenge of learning several new instruments by the innovative musical instrument inventor, William Close "(an America's Got Talent" finalist). The performance demanded musicianship on a variety of 'Close's Creations,' however, the most prominent instrument of the show is called the "Earth Harp." This 24-string harp spans just over 60-feet horizontally from the stage, over the audience, turning the Quantum of the Seas' "Royal Theater" literally "into the instrument."As the "Maestro," the lead role takes the audience on a journey through the various instrumental designs and tonalities of Close's world. Genres within the production ranged from the pop/rock sounds of Smashing Pumpkins, Coldplay and U2 to the intimacy of Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" to an upbeat percussion-driven arrangement of "Vivir Mi Vida" by Marc Anthony and more. This show involved a 40-piece cast of singers, dancers, musicians, and stage staff. For more information on "Sonic Odyssey," check out this behind the scenes footage from the November 2014 install:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tl4JIT2M19MFor more information on the world of William Close, check out his brand:http://williamandtheearthharp.com/
