Researcher

Leuven, Belgium

Researcher and DOE liaison in the Materials & Components Analysis (MCA) department.Studied the morphological, mechanical, and electronic properties of novel systems by various SPM modes, with a focus is on new and difficult to measure materials and devices. As DoE liaison, I developed strong rapport with scientific leads to understand their research and metrology needs in order to select the appropriate characterization technique and then design/coordinate experiments. Identified metrology gaps and helped to develop new materials characterization capabilities. Communicated status to department heads, managers, and partners through monthly, quarterly, yearly reports.

Jan 2019 - Dec 2019

Postdoctoral Researcher

Leuven, Belgium

Postdoc in the SPM group within the materials characterization department at IMEC. In this role, I had the opportunity to collaborate with a variety of programs (logic, memory, batteries) to design and lead projects to characterize the morphological and electronic properties of novel materials with SPM. One of the primary functions was to work closely with a cross-functional team of R&D scientists on 300mm integration of 2D materials. As the SPM expert in the 2D team, I initiated and led projects to understand the impact of aging, plasma treatment, and grain boundaries on the electronic, morphological, and chemical properties of 2D materials. Provided feedback to team on processes leading to best material quality and how to improve material stability.Demonstrated importance to the team through 3 talks and one poster at IMEC’s Partner Technical Week (PTW) and 2 publications in peer-reviewed journals. Results from these experiments have been presented at high level conferences such as IEDM (2D materials: roadmap to CMOS integration, 2018 IDEM).

Feb 2017 - Dec 2018

Postdoctoral Research Associate

Tallahassee, Florida Area

Coordinate high magnetic field FTIR experiments with a rotating group of external scientists visiting every 1-2 weeks. Provided technical support, design of experiment, and data analysis expertise. Responsible for ensuring that experiments were successful. Requiring communication and quick troubleshooting to find solutions when issues arose or equipment malfunctioned. These efforts resulted in 2 publications in Nature Comm. and 1 in Phys Rev B in 4 months. Helped test and optimize probes for FTIR in resistive magnets up to 30T and polarized excitation.

Aug 2016 - Nov 2016

Graduate Research Assistant

Tallahassee, Florida Area

Designed and directed experiments to study the electronic properties of novel semiconductors by optical-spectroscopy and electrical-transport at low temperatures and high magnetic fields. Primary systems studied:Graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), HgTe quantum wells, HgCdTe structures, InAsSb layers, ZnSe/ZnTe quantum dots. Experimental techniques:• Visible (VIS) and infrared (IR) spectroscopy: Raman, photoluminescence, photoconductivity, FTIR.• Electrical transport: DC and AC techniques, Hall Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH), quantum Hall.• Extensive experience with free-space and fiber optics, polarization control and lasers.Optical systems development:• Developed optical fiber based probe for polarization-resolved micro-spectroscopy of atomically thin devices at low temperatures (down to 300mK) and high magnetic fields (up to 31T). This involved working with vendors to determine the best fibers, lenses, and other components to meet our needs and constraints as well as testing components to determine performance.• Modified standard Olympus optical microscope for quick spatially resolved micro-spectroscopy and electrical characterization of atomically thin devices.• Designed and built portable interchangeable current and temperature controlled diode laser setup for injection into single mode fiber. Designed tests to show to show that the output of the fiber was stable over time to better than 0.3%.• Increased efficiency by automating data acquisition and analysis task.Support/collaboration with interdisciplinary teams of scientists and engineers from top institutions around the world.

Jan 2013 - Aug 2016

Graduate Research Assistant

Tallahassee, Florida Area

Growth and characterization of complex oxide thin films• Synthesized Mott insulating films with applications to high quantum efficiency solar cells.• Studied low temperature magneto-transport of the 2DEG at the interface of LaAlO3/SrTiO3. Development:• Helped design and build lab from the ground up for growth and characterization of high quality complex oxides by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). This involved dismantling and shipping two MBE chambers from Penn State to Florida State, where we resembled them. • Designed and built probe for quick electrical characterization of thin film samples down to liquid He temperatures (4.4K). • Automated data acquisition by writing LabView program to control Keithley current source and nano-voltmeter. Materials characterization techniques:Electrical transport, optical absorption spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED).
