I'm an ethics strategist, writer and social change advocate, promoting compassionate governance and policies that prioritise the prevention of suffering of all sentient beings. I'm the Executive Director of the Organisation for the Prevention of Intense Suffering (OPIS), a Swiss-based think-and-do tank I founded to further this goal. We have been advocating internationally for better access to effective medications for people in severe pain, including morphine for terminal cancer patients and certain psychedelics for people with excruciating cluster headaches. We also advocate for an end to the torture and abuse of animals, especially on factory farms.I'm the author of two books on ethics, The Tango of Ethics: Intuition, Rationality and the Prevention of Suffering (Imprint Academic, 2023) and The Battle for Compassion: Ethics in an Apathetic Universe (Algora Publishing, 2011).Trained as a research scientist, I bring an analytical perspective to our ethical challenges, and am one of the leading proponents of a contemporary approach to ethics that focuses on the primacy of suffering. I have previously held research, marketing and training management positions in the pharma and fragrance industries, and was a senior consultant at a Geneva communications agency, working particularly in the global health and biotech space.www.jonathanleighton.orgwww.preventsuffering.org
