Starting at the beginning I had many jobs to earn my pocket money. I started at school buying and selling sweets and running my own tuck shop along with washing up in my local pub. From here I followed my love of animals and worked weekends in what had to be the most amazing pet shop in the North West of England, primarily doing the donkey work however it was a job I really enjoyed.During College I did what most others saw as the worst job ever, working in McDonalds. You know these where some of the best times, the team we had were so much more than work colleges, I made some good friends and have many happy memories. I also learnt a lot about business, training and team building through having a common goal that was to be the best at everything we did. Now I am at a point in my life where I don’t really know what I want to do. Whilst I was trying to figure this out I started work for my Dad in the Distribution Warehouse of Alan Howard, here I did everything including driving the wagon. I was then asked to help with the expansion of our Crewe Store as an extra pair of hands during the works. From here I was given the task of helping integrate our new acquisition, our Sheffield Store into Alan Howard. Here again I was one of the team, here I learned about developing the business through good service. Now after 3 years I was given the task of looking after our Oldham store covering maternity and following this set the task of coming up with my own strategy to develop both of the Oldham and Rochdale Stores. This is where I developed my direct selling and performance monitoring and also started to lead through setting goals and objectives.Then came the opportunity to step up to the mark and lead the sales force. It was only a small sales force back then of just 4.I had no real training I just did what I thought was right and applied some common sense. We were doing well and the team had grown to around 10 when I met who was soon to become my Mentor, Phil Atty.With my vision and drive supported with his experience, structure and knowledge we built and developed the structure to grow and develop. One of the biggest lessons I have ever learnt is how to manage change, this was definitely my biggest challenge getting the whole company to share my vision and support my strategy for growth and durability. Today we have 25 Stores, 70+ BDM’s, and the most amazing team of people I could ever dream of working with. It is this team of 380+ that I am so proud of and owe the success of Alan Howard to and all those who have also shared our journey over the years.
