This is the first team within the Ministry of Health with a focus on behavioural science. The team was setup during the COVID-19 pandemic with the acknowledgement of how critical the behaviour of individuals in the populations affected the response effort. From testing, infection control, social restrictions, vaccination, and quarantine, their effectiveness was dependent on adherence to policy. We focused on understanding the barriers to patient access, adherence to testing, vaccination and isolation for COVID-19 and other behaviours to reduce inequities through policy development, strategy, and operational planning and implementation. We succeeded with saving an estimated 20,000 and no deaths of healthcare workers in NZ.This was a 4 person team and my role was to lead my workstream (behavioural insights) in designing the workplan and developing an operating model for the team but also for intelligence, surveillance, and analytics as an infectious disease epidemiologist. I was involved in:- Developing the strategy for COVID-19 surveillance- Building the work program for my team- Building relationships with internal and external partners- Writing government memos and health reports to Director General of the Ministry of Health and Ministers to provide information, options and advise- Supported the design thinking of the operating model for the Public Health Agency- Led the interactions between surveillance, behavioural science, and testing supply and operations- Developing research projects (leading the design thinking and project direction)- Interpretation of results (Quantitative and Qualitative)- Participating in local and global networks (OECD - behavioural insights, 5 eyes, 5R&D Global Biodefense, cross country dialogues)- Training and mentoring my team to grow the team's capability Show less
