As a wide-eyed first year medical student, I was overwhelmingly excited to begin my career in medicine. Initially, the versatility of a medical degree seemed daunting. I knew that I wanted to improve the lives of people, but who? or how? Collaboration in small groups became a common theme of my education, and more importantly, is an accurate representation of the healthcare management team. I developed the skills necessary to efficiently engage members of a team towards a common goal. Embarking on a medical mission trip to Lima, Peru with my classmates provided an excellent opportunity to sharpen these skills. During this trip, I came to the realization that I aim to increase the accessibility of healthcare. I have always possessed an intrinsic desire to work at the crux of business and medicine. Pursuing an MBA amidst my formal medical education has been wildly exciting. Through discussion with mentors, I soon realized that hospital administration provides the necessary platform to impact the lives of many people at once. I have been thrilled to work on development of an Innovation Strategy with the Arthritis Society. The goals of the project include increasing access to healthcare for rural populations as well as leveraging corporate partnerships. I am excited for the upcoming clinical experiences within the final years of medical school. I hope to build upon my collaboration skills, as well as further diving into the business of medicine.
