Profile bio

About Jonathan March

I'm an ex-Founder with 25 years of Data Engineering and Data Architecture experience, plus over a decade of team management and leadership @ Quantcast, DoorDash, early-Lyft, Wikia (Fandom), Yammer, Six Apart (TypePad, Vox, LiveJournal), Coremetrics, Trilogy, and more.I started working with SQL and DBMS in 1997. Since then, I've been a Database Administrator across many of the major database management systems, as well as Lead Data Architect and Lead Data Engineer on numerous Data Warehouses and ETL/ELT systems. Before the Modern Data Stack era, I built proprietary ETL/ELT systems from scratch in python (3x), perl (2x), and ruby (1x). And over the years, I've written, reviewed and tuned well over 100k lines of SQL. I've also led design of data lake and event streaming architectures, as well as worker/queue systems, third-party data integrations, clickstream analytics, and frontend dashboards. My work is generally biased toward building tailored, in-house solutions that utilize minimal external ("blackbox") dependencies, rather than buying general purpose products from the sprawl of SaaS data startups. In my roles, I've straddled the business and engineering sides of each organization, managing reliable data systems and their supporting engineering/analytics teams. I've fostered collaborative relationships with stakeholders in product, engineering, marketing, sales, finance, and executive teams. And, I have a solid track record of doing so for systems at a scale up to 350k daily data jobs and for internet-scale companies (10M-100M+ MAU) with dozens of key business stakeholders. As far as Data Analytics, I've personally deployed solutions to many problems, including user tracking and sessionization, A/B test measurement/analysis, multi-touch attribution, survival/funnel analysis, customer LTV, geospatial and points-of-interest enrichment, graph analytics, ad campaign measurement/optimization, anomaly detection, and more. Most recently and for fun, I've been building pure-SQL-based Deep Neural Networks, capable of running against numerous SQL engines.I spent the past decade or so working in tech lead (Director) roles, but my passion is Lead Data Engineering.I've taken "family gap years" away from the industry recently, to heal from some tragic losses in life and to focus on fatherhood. But... as of May 2024, I'm looking for my next Big Data opportunity. Please reach out if your team needs help in any of the above.I'm ready and excited to lead a team and help in building the next (and most impactful) Data Platform of my career!

Listed skills include Sql, Databases, Data Warehousing, Data Mining, and 25 others.
