Engineering Manager, M1, Facebook MarketplaceFacebook Apr 2017 - Apr 2018I started and led the engineering teams that were tasked with ratcheting up participation in Marketplace. My team was responsible for an 8x increase in customer participation (over organic growth) and I oversaw the surpassing of both Craigslist and Ebay in number of transactions. In this role I defined the mission and goals for our Growth initiatives, created the core product strategy and consumer experience roadmap to achieve those goals, recruited an engineering team and within six months had delivered (again, over and above organic growth) a 25% increase in daily active people using Marketplace, and using it 15% more often. We powered product experiences such as: targeted triggers to notify consumers of Marketplace content matching their needs, Merchandising efforts to create item collections personalized to consumers with specific interests, and using Rewards as a reinforcing experience for our customers - to leave them delighted with their participation and eager to use the product again. -
Head Of Engineering, "Things To Do" Business UnitGroupon 2016 - Apr 2017Chicago, Il, UsMy last year at Groupon I led software development for the Things To Do (“TTD”) business at Groupon. TTD was the largest of the 5 business units that comprise Groupon (TTD generates a billion dollars in yearly revenue, and is now the fastest growing too), and I guided 18 engineers, engineering managers, and QA in delivering high impact high visibility projects, and helped power the business to double digit growth YoY. I structured the organization and led through the closure of our NYC office, consolidating geographically in Seattle and performing resource allocation planning and regrowing the org here - getting the right people into the right roles (hired slow, fired fast), developing managers from within the org, creating tech lead positions and bringing in senior engineering talent, while relentlessly up-leveling our existing team. I built strong partnerships with my product and business counterparts, formulated and communicated a vision that aligned engineering to business objectives, instilled a leadership-principle based culture (“Customer First”, “Bias for Action”, “Break through Walls”, etc), and formulated the software processes required of an organization of this stature and responsibility: where speed matters, and reliability is essential. In this role, my team defined and built the systems that supply our org with new inventory through external partnerships with ticketing providers, created the internal tools for our Sales and Operations teams to close and curate deals to those events, and developed the UI experiences to provide those events and others all seamlessly to our customers. 87% of our roadmap projects were delivered on time and as expected (what gets measured gets managed). -
Sr. Software Development Manager, Ugc + Mpp + Geo TeamsGroupon 2014 - 2016Chicago, Il, UsI joined Groupon with a charter to build a new team to collect and display User Generated Content (“UGC”), and over the course of 3 years and many projects delivered, I gained responsibility for leading 3 teams concurrently: a distributed org of 20 Managers, Engineers, and QA building consumer products & backend platforms. In 2015, I made a case for an expanded Geo team for Groupon, and started a major cross-cutting initiative driving a half dozen teams around the company to better match customers with the Deals most relevant to where they live and work. Alongside a team of engineers in Santiago Chile, I added Principal engineering, data science / analytics, Design, and a knowledge management expert, and began defining, building and delivering the Geographic services and functionalities that Groupon needed to be a truly “Local” company. We built platform components for geocoding and taxonomy, common mapping functionality and representation, and owned the customer experience for Geographic data and use across the companyIn 2014, I was given an opportunity to hire and build a team around an incubator project that was showing great promise. I launched it less than a year later as Groupon Pages. Pages is a highly customer visible product with the goal to generate a Groupon presence for every merchant on the planet, and that has drawn millions of new customers into the Groupon ecosystem and helped them find the best places for them to do business, driving increased conversion for the company. We created a full stack of services, UI, and ops tools to realize "Pages". Again I was fortunate to lean on a former-engineer-turned-effective-manager to guide the group -
Software Development Manager, User Generated Content TeamGroupon Apr 2013 - 2014Chicago, Il, UsIn 2013, I started the UGC team at Groupon to collect all customer feedback (we collect more on a daily basis than Yelp!), aggregate that data, and display it in ways that help customers make decisions about which places are right for them and to choose wisely where to spend their money. We built end-to-end the database services, APIs, and UI flows and customer experiences to collect and display that data. This team was in San Francisco under my direction, for the final two years being led by one of our first developers, who had grown into a very capable manager and wonderful leader -
Software Engineer Iii / Lead EngineerAmazon.Com 2010 - Apr 2013Seattle, Wa, UsFor most of my final three years at Amazon, I was a Bar Raiser (and Bar Raiser mentor: training other bar raisers. I was on over 1000 interview loops!) but also involved in hiring over 30% of our 70 member division,. I was responsible for 3 major projects delivered during that timeProjects I delivered:‘Test Drive’ for Android Applications: a Cloud infrastructure service that allows customers to play a game before they buy and download it [by starting an instance of the game on an Amazon cloud server, encoding and streaming the video output to your browser window, capturing your mouse clicks and keyboard input, and translating those to events on the server.] I was solely responsible for the resource allocation portion of this product, and designed the software system for routing a customer request to a game server instanceInternationalization of Software Downloads Store. This was a major product category launch and provided the platform for countries outside the US; I organized and led the effort, being involved in code changes from the website down to regionalization of our existing stack of backend services, and working with over a dozen groups across the company from Ordering, Payments, and Fulfillment, in development and testing. A 4 man-year effort. Digital Ordering Convergence. Moving from a custom ordering pipeline to the company standard which is used by all physical goods. Challenges included working with multiple external teams to find solutions for how to process an order with robust fraud check, and deliver the purchased content to the customer instantly in a system that was designed with several hours of expected delay between order creation and completion. -
