About Jonathan Torrey

My career is based on the premise that playing in the dirt is the most effective way to understand the "why" behind building products, building marketing strategies, and building businesses. This obsession with learning and studying customer behavior started back in high school when I used YouTube in 2006 to learn a wrestling takedown move that I later applied in a match. My coach was shocked and described me as "resourceful" but I saw what was coming with the internet. I made my first internet dollar writing reviews for epinions.com. A few eBay sales and AngelFire websites later and I was off to college where I started a digital marketing career in 2010 when success was measured in the number of Likes generated for Facebook Business pages (yes, really). We worked with a number of clients at our little start-up, ranging from consumer packaged goods to automotive companies, and we were one of the first marketing companies to prove that Facebook advertising could drive vehicle sales for car dealerships. It may seem common sense today, but it wasn't back then. This led to the acquisition of our company and my path to working in go-to-market planning, business development, market intelligence, and product management over a 9-year career at one of the largest automotive digital marketing companies in the world. After presenting and consulting advertising strategy to executives at Volvo, Subaru, Ford, Audi, and many other leading manufacturers, I recognized how difficult it was to both scale and measure the performance of digital marketing campaigns for industries with offline sales. There's also a large gap between understanding the "why" and the output of products and data based on theories with a loose understanding of technology and the behaviors it enables. I have a track record of being early to trends and after finally developing more confidence to execute on those hunches, I made my way into sports cards, web3 and am working on cutting-edge technology to bring a better understanding of the "why" to build better marketing strategies. The most pivotal moment in my career, when I was feeling stuck, was going to 100+ garage sales, buying items, and flipping them for profit. I made $5,000 in 1 summer selling everything from nerf guns to travel bags. It was the most hands-on, 1:1 business education I'd ever gotten.Specialties: Connecting dots most others can't see and articulating them through written and verbal communication.
