Jonathan M. Nelson is Founder and Executive Chairman of Providence Equity Partners. He is also Co-Founder and Executive Chairman of Dynasty Equity. Mr. Nelson has been a private equity investor for over 30 years. He founded Providence in 1989 and served as Chief Executive Officer through 2021. Providence is a pioneer of a sector-focused strategy to private equity investing with the vision that a dedicated team of industry experts could build exceptional companies of enduring value. Mr. Nelson currently serves as chairman of Ambassador Theatre Group and director of The Chernin Group. He has also served as a director of numerous other Providence portfolio companies, including Bresnan Communications, Eircom plc, Hulu, Univision Communications, Language Line, MetroNet (now AT&T Canada), MLS Media, VoiceStream Wireless (now Deutsche Telekom), Warner Music Group, Western Wireless Corporation (now AT&T Corp.) and Yankees Entertainment and Sports Network (YES). Prior to founding Providence, he was a Managing Director of Narragansett Capital, which he joined in 1983. Mr. Nelson received a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School and a Bachelor of Arts from Brown University. Mr. Nelson is a Trustee of Brown University and founder of the University’s Jonathan M. Nelson Center for Entrepreneurship, which supports a student-centered and faculty-led initiative that operates in collaboration with various other departments, schools, and centers at Brown to provide students with a strong academic grounding in entrepreneurship, blended with applied experiences and mentorship opportunities. Mr. Nelson is also a Trustee of The Rockefeller University and Institute for Advanced Study, a member of the Board of Dean's Advisors at Harvard Business School and serves on the Board of the Newport Festivals Foundation.
