Ambassador | Participatory Photography Facilitator
CurrentI've been inspired by participatory photography since I did my first project with street kids in Jakarta in 1999 (see below).Facilitating marginalised people in telling their own stories through their own photography is a powerful process and no one does it better than Photovoice. I've initiated a couple of projects with them in the last six months, one of which is developing into a three year programme with a major London hospital with international reach.

Time Out gave me my first professional assignment in 1994, and I will always love them for that. The first book I shot - during three sweltering summer months in Madrid - changed my life, and helped me fulfil the dream of living a life of travel, adventure and photography. Since then I've shot around fifty books and countless features for them: City Guides to New York, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Sydney, Florence, Paris, and umpteen different guides… Show more Time Out gave me my first professional assignment in 1994, and I will always love them for that. One night in 1998, I was photographing protestors throwing rocks and petrol bombs at ranks of police on the streets of Jakarta for the Associated Press. A small barefooted boy pushed past me with a grin, dragging a bucket of rocks through the broken glass and rubble for people at the front line. I was fascinated, and became friendly with a few street kids and started to think how amazing it would be to see the world through their eyes...through their photographs. I was fascinated, and became friendly with a few street kids and started to think how amazing it would be to see the world through their eyes...through their photographs. Once I'd decided to do a project giving them cameras, people came to me from nowhere almost every day to offer help, facilities and money. So my idea for a small project for the walls of a drop in centre turned in to A Child's Eye, a small NGO that conducted three projects. We worked with street and scavenger children in Jakarta, young people from different ethnic groups that had been involved in horrible communal violence in Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo), and with young people separated from their families by the tsunami and the conflict in Aceh.We had over 100 young people in our workshops in total, and were partnered or supported by Save the Children UK, UNICEF, The British Council, and numerous local partner NGOs.One of the biggest highlights was the morning that 45 street kids came hurtling into the National Gallery of Indonesia, saw their photograph and stories printed large on the walls, and skidded to a cartoon halt. The looks of astonishment and delight on their faces stay with me to this day. Show less

In 1998, I was doing a restaurant guide to London for Time Out, and I'd been thinking of going to Indonesia for months. I arrived in Jakarta with one phone number of a friend of a friend of a friend, and a slightly naive desire to bear witness to a pivotal, traumatic time of transition in a country I love. Two days after I arrived I bumped into a photographer on the street, who turned out to be the senior regional snapper for AP in the region. Three weeks later, after a series of extraordinary events, I ended up running the photo desk while the staff photographer was on assignment in eastern Indonesia.I spent the next two intense, inspiring and emotional years photographing Indonesia's journey to her first elected president, as well as spending a couple of months in East Timor in the aftermath of the violence and destruction that followed the country's vote for independence.
