In my role as a Materials Engineer at adidas innovation, my primary focus is on conducting materials research and developing more sustainable alternatives for adidas products. Specifically, I concentrate on the exploration of bio-based materials and those derived from captured carbon, aiming to reduce our reliance on petroleum-based resources.In the past year, my responsibilities have expanded as I took on the position of Co-lead for Biotexfuture at adidas. Biotexfuture is an innovative initiative funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) for a five-year duration. Since November 2019, adidas and ITA have jointly led this program, collaborating with 80 industrial and scientific partners who share our common goal of transitioning the textile value chain from petroleum-based to bio-based materials.As the Co-lead, my role involves initiating and collaborating on new project proposals with members of Biotexfuture and other relevant stakeholders. Additionally, I am responsible for evaluating project outcomes to determine their suitability for commercialization, ensuring that we align with our objectives and drive innovation in sustainable textile materials.In addition, I am actively engaged as the project lead for the Algaetex project. Our primary objective is to develop biosynthetic polymers sourced from algae biofeedstocks, specifically tailored for application within the textile industry.

In my previous role, I was responsible for developing materials innovation concepts, starting from identifying consumer problems and carrying them through to product manufacture. I focused on various aspects, including research, prototyping, testing, and validation.I oversaw projects spanning equipment and footwear in Swim, Outdoor, Cycling, Rugby, and Football categories. A central aspect of my work involved placing a strong emphasis on sustainable materials. Throughout the development process, I strived to identify and incorporate lower impact alternatives.

1 year research project in conjunction with MagHem, a Japanese project whose members included Aichi Steel Corp., Intermetallics Co. Ltd., NEC Tokin Corp., Toyota Motor Corp and Mitsubishi Electric Corp. The aim of this project was to perform R&D on Magnetic Materials for High-efficiency Motors. In this work a Pilot Casting System developed previously (see below) was used to produce strip cast flakes more suitable for the production of high efficiency motors.

My PhD project was focused on the development of a Pilot Strip Casting system in conjunction with Less Common Metals Ltd and the analysis of a number of variables associated with Strip Casting neodymium iron boron (NdFeB). The strip cast flakes produced using this process were then used as a feedstock for the production of sintered NdFeB magnets. During this project I used a wide range of characterisation techniques such as Scanning Electron Microscopy, Confocal Microscopy, X-ray Diffraction, along with a range of magnetic measurement techniques.
