  • Ion Torrent By Life Technologies
    Founder, Chairman, Cto And Ceo
Ion Torrent By Life Technologies Oct 2007 - Oct 2010
    South San Francisco, Ca, Us
Invented first Semiconductor chip for DNA sequencing and published in Nature the first post-light genome. Won the 2010 Connecticut Medal of Technology for inventing the first Semiconductor based DNA sequencing technology. Decoded the genome of Gordon Moore of Moore's law fame and published it in Nature. I sold Ion to Life Technologies for $725 Million in October 2010, and was recognized as a 2011 World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer - becoming the first person to win three times. Epilogue:In April of 2013 Thermo Fisher agreed to acquire Life Technologies for $13.6 billion with independent analysts valuing Ion Torrent at $2.4 billion. Bidders were after the "crown jewel" - Ion's semiconductor sequencing technology - for its potential to transform healthcare. Preceding the Thermo purchase my team established the Ion franchise as the best selling sequencing instruments in the world, created a bioinformatics platform for researchers and clinicians, launched the first system designed to enable the $1,000 genome, invented a revolutionary sample prep method, and launched the first "killer app" of DNA sequencing - the ability for clinicians to grab just the genes you want out of the genome.
  • Raindance Technologies
    Founder, Chairman And Founding Ceo
    Raindance Technologies 2004 - 2009
    Billerica, Ma, Us
Founded, Incorporated, created SAB with 3 Nobel Prize winners, financed company, set vision: "a Raindance personal laboratory system in every lab" and invented their first killer "app" for genomics using droplet based fluidics. First droplet based fluidics company. Brought together technology to make the first universal laboratory instrument- the laboratory on-a-chip equivalent of the personal computer. 2008 World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer. Sold to BioRad in 2017.
  • Clarifi
    Co-Founder & Chairman
    Clarifi 1999 - May 2007
    Us
Founded company as social networking site for financial investors with Michael Rothberg, and Gioel Molinari. Company found success as leading provider of quantitative analysis and risk management software to hedge and mutual funds. In May of 2007 Standard & Poor's the world's foremost provider of independent credit ratings, indices, risk evaluation, investment research, data, and valuation acquired Clarifi. Gioel Molinari became managing director of the Clarifi division. We celebrated success after the closing at the 21 club in New York city.Epilogue:ClariFi's systems became the workhorse of major financial houses around the world ... And then everything crashed in October of 2008. Ok just kidding. Or am I.
  • 454 Life Sciences
Founder, Chairman, Cto & Founding Ceo
    454 Life Sciences Jul 1999 - Sep 2006
    Branford, Ct, Us
First next generation sequencing company and first to market. I invented massively parallel DNA sequencing while on paternity leave and created 454 to commercialize it. Invented first all in vitro cloning for next-generation sequencing based on cloning by limited dilution, assembled team, financed, put in place collaborations and key sites including Broad, Venter, Baylor. Won Wall Street Journal Gold Medal for best innovation, R&D Magazine Top 100 Innovations, selected as World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer. Initiated Neanderthal genome project, first deep cancer sequencing, early detection of drug resistant HIV strains, and the first sequencing of an individual Human Genomes (James Watson). Started the personal genome and precision medicine fields. Developed technology and lead team at 454 that uncovered potential cause of disappearance of honeybee, the first global characterization of structural variations in the human genome, and uncovered virus killing transplant patients; work twice recognized as Top 10 breakthroughs of the year by Science Magazine. 454 had almost everything, invented and owned the market, did the key experiments that changed how cancers are diagnosed. And then I woke up one morning to learn it was sold and I was out of a job. Epilogue:The massively parallel sequencing by synthesis and cloning by limited dilution for sample prep invented by me and my team at 454 formed the basis of all major competing technologies. The experiments we did first on deep-sequencing especially of cancers became the basis of all modern cancer diagnostics. Next generation sequencing is now a multibillion dollar industry. I remain the only person in the world that knows what "454" stands for.
  • Curagen Corporation
    Founder, Chairman & Ceo
    Curagen Corporation 1993 - 2004
    Us
Founded CuraGen in my basement as first genomics company. Brought company public in 1998, one of the best performing stocks on the Nasdaq in 1999. Was exciting to see our Market Cap exceed American Airlines - $5 billion! Raised all financing, over $600 million, developed the technology and clinical pipeline. Established one of the most comprehensive intellectual property porfolios around the human genome. Conceived of and executed first systematic production of fully-human monoclonal antibodies against genomic targets. Got covers of Nature and Science for first global proteomics maps. Architect of strategy and initiated all major collaborations including Genentech, Biogen, Pioneer Hybrid/Dupont, Abgenix/Amgen, Roche, Glaxo, and Seatle Genetics. Invented massively parallel DNA sequencing while on paternity leave, financed, and set up 454 as a separately operating company under my direction to allow CuraGen to focus on Drug Pipeline, and 454 to become the first to market in next generation (massively parallel) sequencing, and world leader in genome sequencing. Left CuraGen with a clinical program, and a full pipeline consisting of 11 fully owned, fully-human, monoclonal antibodies for cancer and autoimmune disorders, incredible cash position ($300mm+), license to at cost access to 454 sequencing as a competitive advantage, and tremendous asset in 66% ownership of 454 corporation to allow additional funding of CuraGen pipeline. Discovered targets for (with my Wife Bonnie Rothberg) and developed CDX-011 a Antibody drug conjugate (ADC) now in Phase II clinical trials for Breast Cancer and Melanoma, and CDX-014 an ADC for Ovarian and renal Cancer. Proud of inventing the first open gene expression method, and using it to discover the target, and develop the first potential therapeutic for triple negative breast cancer (Glembatumumab vedotin).
