My formal career began with 7 years at one of the world's top companies, Procter & Gamble. I set up my own consultancy in 2003. I burnt out in the crash and learnt the hard way that most performance ideas don’t work when you need them most. I led my own recovery by researching and applying ideas from life and death situations such as US Marines, surgeons, and pilots. This experience and research driven approach means I can now generate extremely fast, robust performance improvements through this integration of strategy, psychology, science and military philosophy. Almost all the key ideas are battle tested. My ideas were adopted by one of the world’s most respected strategy consultants when I wrote and then rolled out a major leadership program around the world and are explained in the critically acclaimed book, Stress and Success – Fast Fixes for Turbulent Times. I've also worked with some of the world's most respected Blue Chip firms. I still advise large companies but now spent most of my time working with dynamic SMEs (up to £250m) helping to deliver extremely fast business transformations or turnarounds. These typically take less than 6 months and leave the companies with strong balance sheets, greater leadership capability, organisational effectiveness and highly engaged employees equipped to take the company to the next level. I also work with a small number of executive coaching clients leading their own transformations.

    One of the surprising things i found on becoming a consultant was the relatively poor standard of boards in so many companies I saw. I eventually became involved with the IoD South working to increase and improve young director involvement. During that time I also worked with local committees helping to promote the Institute to younger members (under 42) feeding into the work Miles and the leadership team were doing nationally. I also served on a local branch committee. I was already committed to improving my own standards of directing and this made me even more committed.

    Started my career in Customer Business Development (Sales) before moving into Learning and Development. I was asked to help improve standards in the UK and also advise on standards in Europe. I oversaw the rewrite of the Sales College 1 introducing new media and content. I then took on additional responsibilities in Corporate Learning and Development. Key achievements: Spearheaded an effort to improve people management standards across the UK business. Introduced Accelerated Learning to the organisation. Some of this work was rolled out across Europe and one element become a global course.It was an exciting time to be at P&G as the leadership were transforming the business and solving some long term structural problems that had been holding the company back. Having an insider's view of such large scale change prepared me well for helping other major companies as a consultant. One other key learning points was the importance of values based leadership and how to improve performance through values based change. Few companies were as good as P&G at that time.
