Rotating Equipment Engineer
Machinery Engineer
Mechanical Design Engineering Intern
Over this internship, I designed and qualified a fixture system that would allow for greater ergonomics and usefulness of the belt test equipment available to the engineering team. This summer provided an outstanding opportunity to expand my proficiency with the necessary traits of successful mechanical design engineers. Most importantly, I improved my ability to efficiently and accurately evaluate problems, to think outside of the box, to constantly consider the manufacturability of my designs, as well as my ability to validate, and support the validity of my ideas. I also greatly expanded my skills in SolidWorks 3D CAD software, especially in my ability to transform ideas in my head into models on my screen.
Cnc Programming Intern
Where I had much experience with injection molding and plastic manufacturing previous to my summer with S&C Electric, this internship gave me a great opportunity to learn more about the manufacturing processes involved in the fabrication of metal parts. I served to support the CNC Programming Team by creating 3D models for various parts that were then used to make CNC programs. I also played a major role in the introduction of visual measurement systems onto the production floor. This required that I create large numbers of measurement programs, which broadened my understanding of GD&T dimensional control, as well as the different techniques used to create various features on parts created with mills and lathes. Finally, I was given the opportunity to help streamline different processes across different departments through the use of Excel macros and VBA. The knowledge of this resource has proved invaluable in my continued education and industry experience.
Process Engineering Intern
This internship provided me with the unique opportunity to expand my knowledge of mechanical design engineering as well as my knowledge of plastic part production and injection molding. I was responsible for testing the affect that the use of regrind combined with virgin material had on the visual characteristics of molded plastic parts. This project provided valuable understanding of experiment design methods as well as experience with injection molding processes. I also created multiple fixtures for the Quality Department to aid both in the collection of quality data in the lab and the display of quality data on the production floor. These projects increased my understanding of design with multiple forms of aluminum and sheet metal, as well as the importance of a quality and well thought out design process.
Quality Engineering Intern
As a Quality Engineering Intern, I received my first experience in a real-world engineering environment. Through the collection of countless measurement values, and many discussions resulting from out of spec results, I learned the importance of quality and consistent data collection. I also gained my first experience with part design as I created a fixture system, from sheet metal and extruded aluminum, on which a vision system trial unit could be mounted. Through thorough testing of the trial unit, I learned about experiment design and gained a greater understanding of the need of consistent, accurate, and meaningful information when verifying equipment suitability and part design.
