    The nexus of our communities is our local supermarket(s). The one thing that connects all people regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, gender identity, religion, political affiliation, or favorite sports team is food. We ask so much from our store(s). Our local store(s) brings us fresh foods from all points around the world, provides jobs, and gives so much back to our respective communities. Supermarkets represent 10% of the US retail GDP. They provide 25% of all retail jobs. But, we ask our grocers to do so much more: find our food, ship our food, refrigerate our food, and display and sometimes even prepare our food. This has created dynamics such as: the most energy intensive commercial buildings per square foot, the use of atmosphere altering refrigerants, and conditions creating more than 500 pounds of solid food waste per week per store. Because of this, on average, they are only 1.7% net profit.Along with food industry luminaries, Aaron Daly (formerly the Global Sustainability Director for Whole Foods) and Peter Cooke (creator of the Grocery Stewardship Certification), we have partnered with Ecology Action to create an Institute to help our grocers be the best version of themselves.Aaron, Peter, and I are going to change the world.
