About Jonathan Vigh
I am an atmospheric scientist working at the intersection of weather- and climate-driven risks. My overarching goal is to build engaging tools that help people make risk-informed decisions. Starting from the needs of users first and foremost, this paradigm must be driven by the best data and science possible, including probabilistic hazard modeling and vulnerability assessment to form probabilistic risk frameworks. I am highly collaborative and enjoy working with multiple interdisciplinary teams to use convergent science ad/or co-design principles to build up risk tools which can translate their outputs into guidance for users that is both understandable and actionable. I am currently leading two key projects that incorporate elements of this approach: HurricaneRiskCalculator and the Climate Risk Portal which is being developed for the City and County of Denver. I also work within my primary discipline on projects that involve tropical cyclone observational data, model diagnostics and evaluation, rapid intensification prediction, and space weather model evaluation. I am currently leading a team to create forecaster support products for the National Hurricane Center from observational data taken by aircraft reconnaissance. I am lead developer for the Climate Risk Management engine (CRMe) and the Tropical Cyclone Guidance Project (TCGP). I occasionally help out on other projects as a subject matter expert or project manager. All posts here are 100% my own and should not be taken as representing the views of NSF NCAR.Specialties: tropical cyclones, hurricane aircraft observational data, risk tools, visualization, actionable climate data, model evaluation, model diagnostics
Listed skills include Science, Meteorology, Fortran, Physics, and 25 others.

Project Scientist I
I work on projects that involve tropical cyclones, weather risk, and climate risk. In this position, I created the VDM+ and FLIGHT+ hurricane aircraft datasets, developed a new observations-based historical database of tropical cyclone parameters (TC-OBS), and worked in teams developing new methods of predicting extreme rapid intensification (hurricanes), climate risk predictors, and model evaluation and diagnostics (space weather, tropical cyclones, numerical weather prediction models). Advanced Study Program Postdoctoral Fellow
I investiged various aspects of tropical cyclone inner core structure and intensity change, including eye formation, rapid intensification, and the factors which control the radius of maximum wind. I also worked towards the release of a new structure and intensity data set based on Vortex Data Messages.
Graduate Research Assistant
I worked under Dr. Wayne Schubert for both my Masters and PhD degrees (ensemble forecasting of tropical cyclone track and hurricane eye formation, respectively).During the first half of my PhD, Wayne and I investigated the conditions under which tropical cyclones can rapidly develop a warm core, which is vital for a storm to intensify. Later I examined the temporal evolution of convective morphology during eye formation and built a new dataset of inner core structure and intensity… Show more I worked under Dr. Later I examined the temporal evolution of convective morphology during eye formation and built a new dataset of inner core structure and intensity parameters using aircraft data. My work activities included developing conceptual and/or analytic theories on tropical cyclone structure and intensity change, developing scientific computer codes to calculate results for analytic theories, building and analyzing datasets of hurricane aircraft reconnaissance data and satellite-derived structure data, reading and interpreting scientific literature (over 1900 catalogued articles in my personal library), and writing and publishing scientific papers.I also developed and maintained a web site for the display of operational weather products. My hurricane model guidance plots have been viewed millions of times on the internet, shown in a variety of television markets, and used by educators and off-duty NHC forecasters. Show less
Graduate Teaching Assistant
Teaching Assistant for An Introduction to Atmospheric Modeling (AT604). Developed extensive solution sets to assigned homework including programming tasks, graded course assignments, provided useful feedback and suggestions to students.
Protege, Significant Opportunities In Atmopsheric Science And Research (Soars) Program
Applied an adaptive weighting/fuzzy logic statistical prediction scheme to hurricane intensity for the Northeastern Pacific Basin. Results were compared with standard linear regression.
Undergraduate Teaching Assistant
Taught a lab section of Introduction to Meteorology (for non-science major undergraduates). The emphasis on this class was physical andconceptual understanding of basic meteorological phenomenon.Gave weekly lectures, coursework, grading.
Protege, Significant Opportunities In Atmopsheric Science And Research (Soars) Program
Diagnosed sources of error and bias in the cloud parametrization scheme of the Climate Community Model (CCM3). Model simulated clouds were compared with remote sensing observations (ERBE, ISCCP, GPCP). Developed graphical visualization tools for qualitative comparison.
High School Teacher
Taught Physics, Pre-algebra, Algebra I & II, Geometry, Earth Science, Geography classes, assigned coursework, created tests, grading. Took part in various leadership activities and was instrumental in helping the high school achieve accreditation.
