Research track faculty in the HIVE group and lead for the High-performance Integrated Virtual Environment (HIVE) bioinformatics platform at The George Washington University, the BioCompute project, and several others, including AI/ML pilot projects.Co-PI, Co-I, or lead for several projects with small, interdisciplinary teams. Primary responsibilities are leading research and development teams and writing proposals and publications, but additional responsibilities in teaching, mentorship, and departmental service.Experience building collaborative, multi-disciplinary teams, proposal writing, and championing projects through publications and talks. Areas of technical subject matter include data analysis, bioinformatics workflows, open source standards, data curation, and developmental neuro-genomics (especially copy number variation (CNV)). More recently, I have also contributed to infectious disease projects, including influenza and HIV. Details about two of the flagship projects are below.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------BioComputeBioCompute is a descriptive standard (officially IEEE-2791-2020) for recording computational workflows, and is the only framework to have ever by adopted by the FDA's Data Standards Catalog. It is accepted for four types of drug applications at three Centers, and has been used in formal submissions to the FDA for regulatory clearance. As the Secretary of the P2791 Working Group, I was a driving force in assembling and operating the group, and was a key figure in bringing the project to the attention of the FDA's Data Standards Board for Guidance publication. I have trained both pharma and FDA personnel in its use. I also initiated a public private partnership between CBER at the FDA and our University.https://www.biocomputeobject.org/HIVEThe High-performance Integrated Virtual Environment (HIVE) is a powerful bioinformatics platform originally developed at the FDA that is particularly strong with noisy, real world data. Our institution maintains several instances of the platform for use in several projects with highly sensitive data. As the lead for the project, I deploy new instances of the platform, write and test new workflows, carry out database administration and general server maintenance, and have general oversight of the platform and several of the projects that make use of it. Many of these projects involve work in the private sector and do not result in publications.https://hive.biochemistry.gwu.edu/dna.cgi?cmd=main

Foggy Bottom
BioCompute is a collaborative initiative between George Washington University and the FDA to generate a standards protocol for all next gen sequencing workflow data. The standards are meant to increase reproducibility, be adaptable, improve the pipeline through FDA regulatory evaluations, and be able to interface with any digital platform in order to minimize disruption to existing workflow. We expect most users to fall into three categories: 1. Researchers who want to improve reproducibility, 2. clinical settings (precision medicine and genetic tests) that have a strong need to accurately communicate health information that includes NGS data, and 3. pharmaceutical and biotech companies who submit work to the FDA for regulatory review. We happily welcome input from every corner of the community that analyzes any manner of high throughput sequencing data, or otherwise carries out bioinformatic analyses pipelines. If you have thoughts or feedback that you'd like to share, please reach out to me directly!BioCompute is maturing beyond grant funding and into a Public-Private Partnership. We're currently exploring revenue models that will satisfy all end users. Our goal is to keep the standards open, but to make BioCompute a self-sustaining venture. Lead two recitation sections of undergraduates in Introduction to Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology. My teaching used a novel teaching strategy that focused almost exclusively on high level concepts, and did not spend time discussing or reviewing homework. Rather than reiterating standalone concepts, the strategy was more concerned with the ways in which the concepts interrelate in a broader context, thus providing a more comprehensive picture. These two groups scored the highest in the class.
