I enjoyed my 6 weeks work experience at Robert Bird Group and am thankful for the opportunity. Main disciplines are structural and construction engineering. Key tasks undertaken:• Calculations and preliminary design of structural members for 231 Waymouth St (16 storey student apartments), 262 Pirie St (22 storey) and Rod Laver Arena.• Assessing the strength and stability of structural members during construction stages, including crane lifting and temporary supports. Adelaide Convention Centre Stage 2 Redevelopment and Sydney Airport T1 roof.• Computer modelling using Microstran and Strand7 to assess design actions and deflections for different construction stages.• Site inspections.• Research into stadium design and assist in preparing a tender.• Extensive use of Australian Standards AS/NZS1170, AS3600, AS4100.

I am thankful of Tonkin Consulting for giving me 6 weeks engineering experience and I really enjoyed my time. Key tasks undertaken:• Transport and asset management: Condition assessment of roads, kerbs and footpaths within the City of Prospect, analysis of assets, local council traffic and parking strategies, classification of new roads, pedestrian access and mobility plans and traffic safety auditing. • Land development: Cost estimating a land division and visiting a land development at Virginia to witness proof rolling of the sub base of a road to ensure its quality. • Stormwater: Sizing a detention basin, cost estimation of a stormwater project and determining the peak flow rate and design levels in streams using RORBWin and HEC-RAS. • Wastewater: Sizing a sludge drying lagoon, sizing a wastewater pumping station and assessing a wastewater irrigation plan. • Structural: Research hollow precast floors for an apartment building and calculating the strength and serviceability of a sleeper retaining wall. • GIS: MapInfo and QGIS was learnt and used for a variety of projects.
