About Jon Barnhart
I get to listen to, learn from, and advise the universities that are solving our world’s biggest problems. Higher education is facing an unprecedented assault from every direction—political, demographic, economic, environmental—and even the savviest institutions need guidance to navigate these treacherous waters. I provide universities with the context to understand their situation and the best practices—backed by EAB’s best in class research—to overcome their challenges. I’ve had the privilege of leading much of that research in my time at EAB. My teams have compiled best practices on research funding growth, economic development and commercialization, workforce development, research administration and communications, and university partnerships with industry, government, and international organizations. And now I consult with our partners on how to implement those practices. I work with universities on topics like brand differentiation, process improvement, R&D strategy and economic impact, federal policy strategy, AI, smart campuses, and global partnership strategies. I work with university cabinets and functional leaders across all these areas, brainstorming big ideas and fixing small processes. On any given day you’ll find me in ballrooms, boardrooms, conference rooms, and classrooms—delivering keynote speeches or rolling up my sleeves and working through a group project. My background in political consulting gives me insight into how big, matrixed systems can (or should) work. And my education in international relations provides me the global context to help universities unpack their place in the market—what their risks are and where their opportunities are greatest. At the end of the day, I believe universities are the engines that will drive our society towards solutions for our biggest challenges. And I help them set strategy, remove barriers, and achieve that excellence.
