The UltraFan is the next generation of Rolls-Royce civil aircraft engine incorporating a geared architecture to deliver a step change in performance, noise and engine emissions relative to the current Civil large engine fleet.Reporting directly to the project Chief Design Engineer, as P&AS Project engineer for the UltraFan demonstrator, I lead a team of 25 engineers responsible for the design and validation of solutions to deliver the Performance, Noise, Environmental protection and Installation Aerodynamics attributes of the demonstrator engine.

Responsible for the health, vitality and capability development of the Civil Aerospace Performance group (approx 100 people) spanning a range of activities including skills development/management, succession planning, recruitment, load capacity planning, and the development of tools, processes and methods to meet current and future product requirements. I work globally with other RR sites to share and influence best practice.Within the dept, I directly managed a team of specialists (SMEs) and ‘Methods and Software’ engineers providing support to all projects across all Performance disciplines. I conceived and created this team to focus on cross-project issues and the development of all aspects of capability. As part of this role I promoted and deployed the application of new processes and ways of working into the Performance dept (e.g. Systems Engineering practices), while leading global work on a quality system transformation.

In parallel with my Capability Role, I identified a need for a clear offload/outsourcing strategy for RR Aerospace "System Design" function. I lead the development of this strategy leading to the recommendation to create a new RR owned engineering centre in India, combined with a more optimised development of the UK and Global "managed services" supply chain. To achieve acceptance of my proposal I had to change the nature of offload/outsourcing debate within my dept and change how several more senior managers thought and felt about the subject.- I subsequently lead a global cross-functional activity to build and develop a System Design presence a new RR Engineering centre in Bengaluru, India including recruitment, IT infrastructure, training and capability development.

Working on a high profile new RR engine programme I was responsible for: - Leading several 'whole engine' system design projects where I employed a range of 'Systems Engineering' tools and techniques to ensure robust requirements capture and analysis, concept generation and selection, and the subsequent detail design, development and validation of system solutions.- The investigation, root cause analysis and resolution of 'whole engine' system issues, including the investigation, management and closure of potential and confirmed safety issues- Approval of component and system designs through the RR Design approval process

Working as part of a Performance team on both established (V2500) and new engine programmes (Trent 1000), I was responsible for: - The design and definition of performance engine test experiments and the sub-sequent analysis of test data, establishment of credible explanations for the results and leadership of root cause investigations into shortfalls. - Construction of engine models and the subsequent simulation of engine performance for design and development activity. - The investigation and resolution of in-service issues, involving regular dialogue with the Airframer and airline customers
