My journey in Youth Development started when I was still in high school, wishing someone would be the voice to help show me the way. That is when I made a vow to myself and my community to help guide and improve the lives of young people who were lost like me.This path started when I was in college and I started giving high school students the means to express themselves creatively through music.This led to my position as Field Coordinator with Mapscorps as I helped lead a group of 12 students in their research project on ways affluent communities can help improve their surrounding counterparts without gentrifying them. After 3 long months of asset mapping, community engagement and intense field research the findings were collected, analyzed, summarized and delivered to a room full of stakeholders at Mapscorps' annual scientific symposium.Wanting to continue this journey I decided to join Americorps and become a Public Ally where I would go on to spearhead the Democracy Initiative. I was placed at a local high school to help change the disciplinary culture, aid in post-secondary planning and facilitate civic engagement. This is where I really developed my mentor skills by building relationships with students who consistently felt marginalized and unheard.
