Jan 2017 - Present

Independent Consultant

(Directly Contracted)

Providing utilities expertise in grid modernization, AMI, telecommunications, and IT Enterprise Architecture. Developing long-term strategies and execution roadmaps to fundamentally transform utilities to modern digital infrastructures. My primary results for 2016 were business capability and investment roadmaps to transform grid operations for a major IOU. The solutions envisioned involved Field Area Networking, Distribution Automation, new SCADA with outage management, enterprise work and asset management with mobility, enterprise GIS, and major improvements in cyber security. As the original strategy has progressed, the emphasis has started to switch to better Distributed Energy Resources (DER) integration, advanced analytics, data quality improvement for field assets, and a renewed emphasis on transmission and substation support. The strategy effort ultimately transitioned to program inception, preliminary design, and vendor selections.

Feb 2016 - Jan 2017

Utilities Technologist

New Orleans, La

Senior utilities consultant leading strategy efforts around grid modernization, AMI, the use of Big Data/analytics, renewables integration, and telecommunications strategy. Delivered "on the ground" consulting at large IOUs and municipal utilities. Recent engagements have included:- Long-term telecommunications strategies incorporating IoT, distribution automation networks, AMI, and core networks.- Grid Modernization strategies, telecommunications, and analytics approaches.- Strategies for incorporating increased levels of renewables onto distribution networks.Led a management consulting engagement at Hawaiian Electric helping them develop their Distributed Generation Interconnection Plan (DGIP) and Integrated Interconnection Queue (IIQ) plan. Both plans were delivered to the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission in response to their Order (32053). I provided solutions architecture for both plans, as well as providing Leidos project management. DGIP provides a 15 year vision for Distributed Energy Resources (DER), concentrating on distribution network upgrades, grid modernization, and tariff changes. IIQ lays out a multi-year plan for improving the business processes and external reporting for interconnection requests. The plans were delivered successfully under a very aggressive schedule.

2013 - Feb 2016

Vp, Chief Technologist

Entergy Outsource

As an executive on a full Information Technology Outsource (ITO), I led the delivery of technology across all aspects of the utility. This was a high visibility, customer-facing role that engaged business leaders across the utility, the CIO, and the Office of the CIO. Responsible for technology and service delivery strategy, and oversaw the technical content of almost 500 staff. Developed and then executed a project portfolio of over 300 projects annually, and supported the client in the oversight of $60-90 million of capital spending annually. Additionally, as a VP for Leidos/SAIC, I participated in executive oversight of the outsourcing engagement. This internal facing role encompassed issues of contract compliance, human resources, program management, and overall business strategy. Acted as the primary point of contact for technical collaboration between the outsource and the broader utility technology practices at the company.I consulted with my clients and peers on the proper use of technology in the operation of the utility. Strategic direction and project planning for the implementation of information and operational technology was provided. This encompassed a large range of solutions: advanced metering, wide area telecommunications, data center design/build with disaster resiliency, employee outreach/collaboration, mobility, customer engagement through internet technologies, cyber security, and general IT management. The emphasis wass on the full lifecycle of technology, from inception to development to operations to retirement. Getting the total cost of ownership of technology is challenging, and delivering technical solutions with the right mix of business applicability and cost effectiveness is an on-going, ever-changing challenge. Drawing on my backgrounds in engineering, program management, enterprise architecture, IT service delivery, and business/finance allows me to craft solutions to some of the most challenging problems in industry.
