Commercial Finishing Artist And Visual Effects ArtistMultiple Companies 2011 - 2017Greater Los Angeles AreaI spent the final stage of my career in the entertainment industry working for visual effects departments. These departments existed within advertising agencies, commercial editing firms, and effects studios. I worked as a visual effects and finishing artist. The work involved taking many separate elements and combining them into a finished shot. I transformed the appearance of actors, props, and even entire landscapes.I taught myself the tools of the trade, relying on a combination of online and on-the-job training. I developed fluency in some of the most complex and essential software in the industry. I had the pleasure of helping bring to life projects for Disney, Universal Studios, Apple, and many others. This work pushed my creative problem-solving skills to their limit. When I worked as a senior or supervising artist, I had to wear many hats. I had to balance the technical demands of the project with managing teams of artists across several disciplines. Attention to detail had to be razor sharp. During these years I was fortunate to work with some of the most gifted digital artists in Los Angeles.Companies would hire me as an independent contractor. The next project was never guaranteed, and I had no company benefits. The job of saving money for the future fell on me and my wife. We would research, save, and invest as best we could. In 2017 my oldest daughter had a recurrence of debilitating neuropathy. She required several weeks in the hospital and months of rehabilitation. The bills decimated our savings. My mom, the CEO of SeaCure Advisors, offered me a position at the firm. I leapt at the chance to start a new adventure, learn how to plan for my financial future, and help others do the same. -
Assistant Editor And EditorMultiple Companies 2006 - 2011Greater Los Angeles AreaI began my editing career working on an independent movie. From there I worked as a video editor on reality television and several documentary programs for the History Channel. After my dad's death in 2008, I returned to Los Angeles. I edited commercials for AMPM, Cracker Barrel, Nintendo, Dole, and another independent film. All these jobs required impeccable organizational skills. I developed deep competency with complex editing software and a mastery of data management.Above all, this work demanded people skills. I had to manage a variety of creative voices from directors, writers, producers, and actors. Each person wanted their ideas to make the final cut. It was challenging work. It straddled the boundary between the creative and the technical, with a dash of psychology. This was also the time during which my family grew in size by two beautiful girls! To maintain a steady stream of income I continued as an assistant editor for commercials. I worked for many of the leading commercial editing firms in the industry. I helped bring commercials to air for brands such as Apple, Ford, Lincoln, Delta, BMW, Teleflora, and dozens of other top brands. This work required me to serve as a liaison between the editing team and finishing companies. These companies would apply final visual effects and graphics to a commercial before it went to air. The wizardry of the artists I worked with fascinated me. I began teaching myself their trade. After completing dozens of self-guided projects, I started taking work as a commercial finishing artist. -
Production And Post Production AssistantMultiple Companies 1997 - 2006Greater Los Angeles AreaIn college, I interned at the most prestigious visual effects company in the world, Industrial Light and Magic. I also worked as a production assistant and camera assistant on the sets of local short and feature film shoots in Boston and Vermont. I loved the familial atmosphere I experienced at those jobs. The determined, creative, entrepreneurial spirit of the producers and directors was inspiring. I wanted this work to be my life and moved to Los Angeles to make a go of it.My first real job was as an assistant at Digital Domain, the visual effects studio behind Titanic. After Digital Domain, I tried launching my own projects. To make ends meet, I worked several jobs featuring my technical literacy. I built and maintained company websites. I designed promotional materials including brochures and DVDs. I built customized databases to track materials and project budgets. In 2005 I settled at a commercial editing studio in Santa Monica, CA called Chrome. There, I built a digital file system that organized the materials editors needed to edit and finish their projects. While there I honed my editing skills. By 2006, I had my first day on set as the editor of an independent feature film.I left Chrome in October of 2007 to return to Boston when doctors discovered my dad had brain cancer. Finances dictated that I wouldn’t be able to stop working. But I wanted to help my mom and sister with his care for as long as he was with us.
