I had the opportunity to practice in an inpatient acute care setting and hand therapy in an outpatient setting. I evaluated and treated a wide variety of diagnoses in both settings. Most commonly treated diagnoses in outpatient included distal radius fractures, tendon/hand injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, CMC arthroplasty, Dupuytren's contracture, DeQuervain's, lateral epicondylitis, CVA, and finger amputation. I regularly took measurements of grip/pinch strength, AROM using a goniometer, upper extremity edema, and finger dexterity using the 9-hole peg test. I learned many treatments techniques and how to provide PROM, scar massage, retrograde massage, manual massage, create appropriate home exercise programs, select and grade appropriate activities, and also create treatment programs for various patients using a BTE machine. I also learned for perform many different provocative tests and utilized a variety of physical agent modalities such as ultrasound, phonophoresis, iontophoresis, Fluidotherapy, e-stim, and paraffin wax. I also gained experience with use of taping and creating splints. I regularly completed functional agility tests for employers and also had the opportunity to work with a patient on a work hardening program. I watched a functional capacity test be performed as well.In acute care I regularly screened, evaluated, and treated a variety of patients with the most common diagnoses being COPD, THA/TKA/ORIF, hip fracture, laminectomy, bowel obstruction, amputation. rotator cuff repair, CHF, Parkinson's, and dementia/altered mental status. I learned how to further provide occupation-based treatments in a hospital setting such as performing ADLs/IADLs, bed mobility, functional transfers/mobility, navigating environmental barriers, standing tolerance, oxygen line manipulation, and medication management.

I also gained a great deal of experience in general acute care and ICU settings and as well as use of electronic documentation. I evaluated and treated orthopedic conditions on Excela's Joint Works unit and a variety of diagnoses in acute care including cardiac, pulmonary, and neurological conditions. I regularly provided education on use of adaptive equipment & devices, post-surgical precautions, safety, and functional transfers for patients recovering from joint replacements. I also created care plans, appropriate goals, and provided purposeful occupation-based treatments and client-centered care to restore function and return patients to baseline. Most common diagnoses evaluated and treated included THA/TKA, CVA, CAD/CABG/CHF, COPD, ORIF/Fractures, Amputation, and Parkinson's.
