In an attempt to take direct action on my dedication to key issues like the environment, energy and climate change, I founded Next Frontier Wind to try and establish a 300 megawatt wind farm in Montana to coincide with then approved TransCanada transition lines that were to be built from Las Vegas. While we had success developing the project, the transmission lines were never completed due to the economic recession.

2008 was the perfect storm for innovation, hope and change. Having met Obama’s Senate team during the ‘06 cycle, I was able to join the Obama for President campaign as Digital Strategist #1 and overall employee #14 -- before he even officially announced his candidacy. Beyond building out the initial digital team and strategy, I was directly responsible for digital operations in the critical early states of IA, NH, NV & SC that helped propel Obama to the Democratic nomination. Following the primary, I shifted my efforts to being the liaison between the digital team and traditional communications teams. I created the campaign’s Fight The Smears campaign, a first in inoculation of political untruths -- an approach that has become the norm in subsequent presidential campaigns through today. This was a direct departure from the old playbook of ignoring it in hopes of not adding fuel to the fire (ie. Swift Boat Veterans). We redefined digital electioneering and established innovation as the standard for campaigns to come.
The ‘06 cycle was a big one and the PA Senate race against Senator Rick Santorum was the marquee. My job was to identify and harness all the possibilities of online communications, organizing and fundraising in a pivotal time of digital transformation. We broke records for online fundraising and reached whole new audiences through digital owned and earned channels as well as writing the playbook for emerging platforms such as Youtube and social media.
Being a small, innovative reader-supported magazine trying to shake up the publishing model, I served as an all-arounder as we navigated the quite challenging publishing industry in the small climbing market. Responsible for making the magazine go from ideas to a physical publication that was delivered to our subscribers. I both managed and optimized the spend side of the budget sheet while maintaining the integrity and culture of the mag. I also worked on new and innovative ways to grow the subscriber base.
