Studies of the mechanisms by which the human pathogen Streptococcus pyogenes interacts with the immune system of the host, in the laboratory of Prof. Gunnar Lindahl. In my main project we have shown that the major surface protein of S. pyogenes, the M protein, escapes a protective antibody response. In a related project I have characterized how M proteins interact with the complement regulatory protein factor H.

Studies of the genetics of antibiotic resistance in staphylococci, in the laboratory of Prof. Diarmaid Hughes. The goal was to identify mutations in S. aureus that cause resistance to Fusidic acid and aminoglycosides, and the clinically important small colony phenotype. This short but productive PostDoc period gave me new insights into bacterial genetics and the increasingly important field of antimicrobial resistance.

Characterization of extracellular proteins used by the horse pathogen Streptococcus equi to initiate infection and cause disease. This PhD-project focused on a number of bacterial proteins that adhere to extracellular matrix components of the host, and a secreted enzyme that targets the immune response by degrading immunoglobulins.
