Nearly 20 years ago, I made a transition into higher education, joining the faculty at the Vanderbilt Owen Graduate School of Management. As an Associate Dean, Faculty Director and Professor, I have had the pleasure of designing and developing programs that helped individuals and their organizations develop the skills they needed to succeed. While in these roles I have continued to help create new companies in a variety of promising sectors. I have recently added a new role as CEO of Duet Biosystems. We are using a proprietary algorithm, MuSyC, developed at Vanderbilt, and AI to help pharma companies more efficiently develop combination drugs. During my business career, I have had the opportunity to serve as a CEO, Director, senior executive and advisor for a broad range of companies, from raw start-ups to members of the Fortune 500. Throughout this journey, I have recognized the importance of leadership, talent development, perseverance and strategic vision to an organization’s success. Growing a business is hard work. I have sat in front of a white board and created business concepts that within a few years became thriving companies. I have also killed ideas that upon due diligence were not right for the current market. I have raised millions in angel, venture and corporate capital to fuel new companies. I have had to scale back when we’ve gone too fast. I have recruited and developed successful teams. I have also had to recover from unfortunate hires. I have managed successful investor exits. Overall, I have learned that success rarely comes without sometimes getting black and blue in the process and as a leader it is difficult to thrive without an effective support network.
