I live in Salt Lake City, Utah. Hiking, golfing, writing and an occasional mountain bike adventure are among my favorite activities. A solid workout at the gym is part of my daily routine. I am the proud papa of five awesome adult children, and the grateful grandpa of two lively grandkids.My career is laced with mentors and influencers to whom I owe a great debt of gratitude. I feel fortunate to have learned from some of the very best. The most influential mentor (or perhaps, anti-mentor) has been the life insurance sales system common to many life insurance companies. It is what I learned from this “mentor” that influenced me to seek a better way to help people with their life insurance needs. The traditional life insurance sales process sets up a win/lose scenario. The salesperson and the life insurance company win, and the customer eventually loses. This happens because consumers have little choice but to trust the salesperson. Life insurance companies are required to provide ethics training to their agents. The classroom training they provide is good. However, the real training happens with the new agent’s sales manager, during presentations. Sales managers are not under the same rigid requirements. People often, unknowingly, purchase a policy that is not appropriate for their situation. The salesperson is motivated to sell this type of policy for various reasons - it’s an easier sale, pays a higher commission, or it’s the type of policy upper management wants to sell. The first-year failure rate for new agents is over 90% (97% after five years). Sales agents and their managers are highly motivated to make as much commission per sale as possible, because their warm market is limited. The majority of sales managers have only a marginal understanding of how these policies actually work. Rookie agents trust their sales manager, so the whole process is nothing more than a show of confidence, which often works because the average consumer has no understanding about life insurance – they just know they need it. By the time a policy fails there is no one left to hold accountable. The agents have moved on to other careers and the life insurance company has all of the legal forms you signed stating you knew what you were purchasing. I founded Simplis Life to empower consumers.
