Since accepting an early retirement from GE, I spent four years as a global consultant for GE and other multinational companies. For the past seven years, I have been involved as a consultant and now employee for a unique and innovative profession-based learning model for juniors and seniors in high school.My goal is to help transform K-12 education to a model that encourages involvement by the business community in the education process. Teachers need to transition from teaching for the test to a model that fast forwards the students to life after college in a real world environment. Companies/organizations need to be involved in education providing mentors, speakers, guest instructors and curriculum help. The students need to do real-life projects for real companies. The goal of a K-12 program should not only be preparing the students for college, but for the rest of their life. This includes professional skill development and workforce selection process.We need to move from a stand and deliver education model to one where students can learn the soft skills in addtion to the techical expertise in a career they want to enter. The way we learn has not changed since the beginning of the Industrial Age. We listen to lectures, read chapters, take quizes/tests and go to the next grade. "If it's not broken, break it."
