Previously employed as an epidemiologist with Epicentre, in the 'Field Epidemiology and Trainings' department. My main tasks focus on epidemiology in emergency contexts: household surveys; establishing epidemic-prone disease surveillance systems; outbreak investigation; and using GIS techniques to map disease risk and identify spatiotemporal clusters. In addition, I have been the principal investigator on clinical research projects, have been involved in writing guidelines and articles based on my work, and have developed and provided trainings on various aspects of humanitarian epidemiology for capacity building.

Surge capacity for the coordination of the information management of the Health Cluster in Myanmar, responding to the needs of two ongoing humanitarian crises, in Rakhine and Kachin states. I am tasked with supporting health cluster partners in establishing and improving the health information systems, specifically the Early Warning And Response System (EWARS) for the surveillance of epidemic-prone diseases, implementing tools for the analysis and presentation of nutrition trends, and using GIS techniques to map the health resources and services availability.

The Health and Nutrition Tracking Service (HNTS, housed within Merlin), was an inter-agency project whose mandate was to provide timely, accurate information on key indicators to humanitarian actors working in complex emergencies. My tasks were to establish working relationships with the partners in the Health and Nutrition clusters, review and advise on survey protocols, train and supervise staff in conducting household surveys, analyse data and report survey results, and organize rapid assessments of crisis-affected populations. I also contributed to the development and pilot-testing of new methodologies, including establishing a community-based mortality and malnutrition surveillance system in Central African Republic with MSF-Spain and using multiple data sources to infer trends in mortality in Eastern DRC.

Primary responsibility to develop, field test and co-ordinate the finalisation of a multi-sectoral rapidassessment tool. This has involved deployment to Kenya in the wake of post-election violence, andinvolvement in the co-ordination of health information management following a number of other crises.Other duties include the analysis of conflict mortality data and compiling a set of indicators andbenchmarks for use in evaluating humanitarian response

Responsible for regular monitoring and reporting of data from an MDR-TB treatment pilot project, aswell as facilitating the data requirements of team members, restructuring and improving the database,and being centrally involved in determining and carrying out the operational research agenda. Duringthis time, I managed a team of 3 data managers.

Founded and managed “The Voice of Slavery”, a fundraising and awareness-raising project in support of Anti-Slavery International. In this role, I managed a small team of people and liased with external bodies in order to achieve our goals of producing an album of songs and putting on a concert for the charity, which was successfully staged in March 2007, and which raised large amounts of publicity and over $120 000.

This primarily involved the cleaning and analysis of survey data, and the dissemination of our results, both for publication in academic journals and presentation at conferences. Benefits-incidence and principal components analytical techniques were used in assessing which socio-economic groups within the target population were benefiting from an Oxfam-led community health insurance initiative.A second project involved the preparation of a working paper (WHO, UNAIDS, LSHTM) on the feasibility of the introduction and scaling-up of male circumcision as an HIV prevention strategy. This involved researching the available epidemiological and anthropological literature relating to the practice of male circumcision in different contexts and the impact this has on HIV incidence, and compiling a report and paper for publication.
