About Jonny Stirling
To date my professional career has spanned over 15 years. Primarily my focus and experience is in back-end development, working with Python specifically over the last few years and PHP prior. Most often this involved the use of the Flask framework to build microservice APIs alongside multiple other 3rd party libraries / modules available via pip / PyPI which were added where relevant and safe. Such libraries included: SQLAlchemy; Marshmallow; PyJWT; pytest; ruff; mypy (static type checking) etc... Using the items mentioned I have designed and implemented (individually or as part of a team) a wide range of applications from video game support services with (RESTful) APIs for online gameplay requiring high-availability and efficient / cost effective setups, CMS platforms, ticketed event management applications (for live events e.g. large festivals) to basic CRUD applications. Every project had its own unique set of requirements / complexities whether due to the expected traffic, supporting single / multiple 3rd party integrations (e.g. with multiple payment gateways; requiring graceful failover), custom data reporting / processing, linking to non-standard internal and external services for specific functionality and so forth.My secondary focus is (dev)ops. In particular I have spent time working with Linux (Red Hat / CentOS, Debian / Ubuntu, Amazon Linux 2) server configurations, Apache HTTPd and / or NGiNX web servers / reverse proxy., MySQL and PostgreSQL DBMS (configuration, query writing, query optimisation) stacks. Recent roles included using many AWS services together (VPC, EC2, ECS, ECR, RDS, SQS, SNS, GameLift, ElasticBeanstalk, Lambda, Cloudwatch et al.), and some “Infrastructure as Code” strategies using CloudFormation, CodePipeline, CodeBuild and CodeDeploy for rolling application upgrades and looking into use of Terraform to deploy shared and low level infrastructure for supporting multiple microservices.
