I have been working in the IT Support industry for over 20 years now. During that time I’ve been able to implement and administer a wide variety of applications and infrastructure, however just being able to do cool things with cool stuff (at least if you’re letting your inner geek out) doesn’t work in today demanding business environments. You have to temper the latest cool software package you saw demo’d at a launch event with budgets, timeframes and if this even is a good fit for your environment. I’ve seen too many real life examples of organizations that didn’t really do self analysis to see if a product was a good fit, and blown too much time and money making a square peg fit a round hole, and the whole project ends up ‘wagging the dog’. Ultimately for most IT folks it’s about making the business run better…stronger…faster, It’s almost like an episode of the 6 million dollar man.
