Profile bio

About Jon T.O. Severson

*Now Available fo Consulting or Contract Work*For 30 years my image to many has been well known amongst many for being someone who likes to bring people together and help make connections. It’s apart of my DNA, anyone who knew my father or grandfather can attest to that as they were masters in their community at such. However, what many don’t know about me is for my whole life I have loved to read and have an above average mechanical mind as well. For me, education was fun and my study focus in college only built upon my love of reading: History, Political Science, and English. When one combines life long (age 10?) the love of people of all types and creating meaningful long term connections with a love of reading/learning the ability to not only learn a lot, but learn how to learn a lot quickly one comes to sincerely understand and become highly knowledgeable in a variety of topics/industries. With even just an intermediate or expert level of understanding on a wide and deep range of topics, learning something new or acquiring a level of proficiency in a given area is akin to how people who know 3-4 key languages can then learn and achieve fluency in the time it takes many to just achieve memorization of 100 words much less achieve Beginner/Novice understanding of that language. (Note: Skill levels referenced are not arbitrarily being applied, but based off Dreyfus model of skill acquisition). The reason for explaining this is to give context to the my career journey you see below as well as the value of that experience to anyone wishing to hire me for a project or contract work. I’m not simply someone who’s read about something and thinks they know their an expert. I’m not simply someone who’s “heard” from “many people” (usually only a handful at best) how something is and takes it as truth. My approach is to not just apply both, but take into account possible biases as well as seek out experts to novices (beginners when applicable) to draw the best possible conclusions given the allotted time to do so. That said, not every project requires such and my skill set is not simply limited to the above mentioned. Feel free to reach out to arrange for a 30 min consultation. Even if its not listed above, you may be surprised how quickly I learn and adapt to exceed expectations.

Listed skills include Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Advertising, Social Media, and 39 others.

Drop Bars & Knobbies

During COVID I created a Facebook group called Drop Bars & Knobbies for fun as I knew it was a popular niche. I myself have had such a bone in the stable always for 20 years. Today that group is over 17,000 strong and I didn’t do much to promote beyond add friends to it. This is a new venture, but an age old passion. I’ve written articles on such for CXMagazine.com, GravelCyclist.com, and others. I’ve been sent handlebars to test for 15 years designed for off road use, as well as tires for mixed terrain used with drop bars. Website coming soon. Logo done. Schwag coming soon to sell on the site. I’m quite excited for where this could go and it’s a very new one of looking at bike use. Follow our Facebook group today! We also are on IG and LinkedIn.

General contract/consulting services born out of Covid causing me to hit the pause button on events for the near future that much of any given year was based off of for the last 16 years. What started as being asked to do projects for friends and connections led me to a realization this is my path moving forward for the foreseeable future and beyond. What should you consider me for? Well here is a sample of past/present projects I’ve been hired for by friends/connections. This really isn’t “new” for me to do such work, I have done such for 15 years as needed when approached by people who appreciate my work ethic, analytical mind, ability to learn quickly, and a network of connections that’s really second to very few. Well read and Well Connected, let’s use that to your advantage. Examples of past contract work:-Copywriting: Technical Manuel’s to Story telling. Product descriptions to advertising copy. Have a proposal for an investor or potential project partner you feel could use some massaging? I’ve done that too. 120 words to 20 pages of fresh copy can be turned around quickly. Sometimes same day or within 24 hours. -Marketing Strategies. People’s Habits have changed. Your marketing needs to as well. -Businesses Strategy. Can’t see the forrest through the trees? I can help-Research. Time is tight, and your time is valuable. Farm it out. -Second Set of Eyes/Ears. Sometimes a few hours with someone at your level helps you make better decisions. -Waste Reduction. Reduce monthly costs, Improve Efficiency, Find better suppliers. -Training Staff. Sometimes better me than the boss or coworker-Product Development. Napkin to the Shelves. -Special Projects. You need someone full or part time to help execute, but not a long term employee. I’m hear for you. That’s the short list. Have something else you think I could be a fit in? Let’s schedule a meeting.

Associate Publisher/Partner/Vp Of Sales

Peak Region Cyclist

While a part owner of Peak Region Cyclist I helped with the creation of the company, took the original concept from a mountain bike specific Colorado Springs only idea to covering all aspects of cycling for the Pikes Peak Region (Castle Rock, Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Salida, Buena Vista, and Woodland Park) as well as came up with the title of the publication...Peak Region Cyclist. Also responsible for taking the magazine from 2000 copies distributed a month to 6000+....while figuring out how to cut our cost by 50% in printing. Also created, coordinated resources/efforts for a first of it's kind in The Rockies Bicycle Show that ran for 2 years. First year attracted 44 booths, second year 60. Also coordinate a weekend of events to add to the draw. Used connections from 20 years of experience in the cycling industry as well as from running Colorado Young Professionals to get initial advertisers, find a graphic designer, the printer used when I left, and much of the content. I was the front line of PR efforts at all times. Shop visits, club coordination, and talking with cyclists in our region.

Financial and other issues caused the company to close about a month after I left. It was fun while it lasted and I got to live a dream.

Marketing/Cstore Oversight/Public Relations/Eventual Takeover

Severson Food Plus/Oil/Propane

Family Business. Core business was B2B distribution of petroleum/propane products to Western WI/South East MN. Also direct distribution of oil and propane for home heating in the same region. We also owned at the time 8 Cstores, 1 Oil Change/gas station, 4 carwashes attached to 4 Cstores, and had dedicated food hot food takeout (pizza/fried chicken/burgers made in house) at 5 locations. My jobs over the years varied. Early years I painted buildings, stocked coolers, cleaned, filled orders, did deliveries, etc... Starting in high school I was taught management skills, how to write radio ads, and basic newspaper ad/billboard designs philosophies. After college my duties expanded and grew more varied. Day to day I’d oversee the Cstores/food/car wash operations where I worked as a cashier, made repairs to whatever needed to be fixed, and oversaw creative/advertising as needed both in house as well as the traditional media outlets of the time. I also created the first of it’s kind digital marketing at the pump after learning there were video inputs for two locations in the back rooms. Using PowerPoint and a PC with ad video card I created our own advertising medium at the pumps that played while people pumped gas....in 1998 no less. I also lobbied in DC as a MN rep for the National Association of Convenience stores, represented our biz at PR events, attended invite only CStore News/NACS/Conoco events as needed for the company. When I left I was also helping develop procedures to help improve customer experience/reduce downtime’s, worked with various vendors on promotions/placement, handled employee issues, helped train new managers, and even customized our car washes to overcome manufacture oversights to clean cars better. I also worked with local nonprofits on what we would sponsor and our suppliers to bring added value to our sponsorships.
