I supervise doctoral students in practicum at UPMC's Western Psychiatric Hospital.

The position involves clinical, managerial and administrative duties. Clinical responsibilities range from individual psychotherapy, development of behavior plans, and program development such as psychotherapy groups for the inpatient units. I manage all direct care and nursing staff on the unit, as well as anything associated with programming. Administrative duties include, but are not limited to, various reports and research, advocating for the unit's needs, working with administration on policies and staff trainings, and development of new programs.

Program director of Glen Meadows, the behavior health residential nursing facility at Kane Regional, Glen Hazel. I supervise the on-site Assistant Program Director in program development and management of staff as related to programming. This supervision includes group programming, developing a therapeutic milieu, and individualized therapy and behavior planning. As far as we know, this unit is the first of its kind: a residential nursing facility with behavioral health programming for patients with a chronic psychiatric history who require a residential nursing care setting. Traditionally, these patients are rejected from nursing homes, and/or get stuck in the "rotating door" of inpatient hospitalization. This should reduce hospital readmissions, lending to much fewer life transitions and, consequently, comfort and quality of life for patients.

I worked as a counseling center therapy for Carnegie Mellon University students.

This position involves supervising doctor of psychology students at their practicum site. I meet with each student for an hour, weekly, to discuss the student's caseload. In particular, we make certain to cover any cases that might involve safety or ethical concerns. A primary focus for the practicum students has been working with multicultural clients. As a supervisor, I take a developmental approach to help the students build upon a wide range of skills necessary for eventually practicing as a psychologist. These skills include, but are not limited to, microskills, conceptual skills to understand a client and present the client's information to supervisors and peers, and psychotherapy skills including learning about a range of theoretical orientations and developing practical abilities within a select couple orientations of interest to the student. In order to gain these skills, the students audio or video recorded a few sessions to review with me during supervision, present cases weekly for feedback, and read a few books on psychotherapy which we will slowly apply conceptually and eventually in practice. There is a focus on both understanding the personality and developing brief intervention skills.

I worked on the "Atrium," 13th Floor of WPIC inpatient hospital. This floor is a general adult, mood and anxiety disorders, floor specializing in treatment of patients diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. I ran Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Seeking Safety groups, as well as occasional Interpersonal Social Rhythm Therapy and Cognitive Behavior Therapy groups. Additionally, I conducted individual therapy sessions, utilizing a wide-range of orientations depending on the patient's presenting concern. These orientations include DBT, CBT, ACT, Exposure Response-Prevention, Interpersonal Social Rhythm Therapy, Time Limited Dynamic Therapy, Self Psychology, Nightmare Protocol / Dream Restructuring, and Gestalt/Experiential/Emotion-Focused Therapy. Finally, I regularly worked with patients to complete and review Behavior Chain Analyses regarding the events that brought the patient to the hospital.

After attaining my Bachelor's degree at Denison University, I began work at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in the Women's Behavioral HealthCare (WBHC) department. I worked primarily with Dr. Dorothy Sit on a study examining Light Therapy for Depression in Bipolar Disorder, but I also worked with data on Dr. Kathy Wisner's study of Depression in Postpartum mothers. I continued working with the WBHC through my Master's Degree and into my doctoral studies, at which time I transferred to the Depression and Manic Depression Prevention Program to work with Dr. Ellen Frank and Dr. Holly Swartz for my doctoral practicum and to gain knowledge about Interpersonal Social Rhythm Therapy. After the year-long practicum, I continued working for the DMDPP as a paid employee for two more years.

I worked at Staunton Clinic as a Doctoral Student Psychotherapist for a year-long practicum. At Staunton Clinic, I had the opportunity to work with a diverse body of clients from a wide-range of cultural, socio-economic, and ethnic backgrounds, as well as various present problems that brought these clients into therapy. My experience included both brief psychotherapy work, as well as the opportunity to complete relatively long-term psychotherapy work with several clients over the course of my practicum year. I ended up working with a number of clients court-mandated to psychotherapy, and despite the natural resistance a client has when forced into treatment, I believe my work with these clients promoted genuine interest and commitment to the psychotherapy process, as well as sustained personal growth and behavior-change. At Staunton, I was able to continue using the Interpersonal Social Rhythm Therapy skills I gain during my practicum at UPMC, while expanding my interest and skills using a wide range of psychodynamic approaches.

As a TA for Masters-level research methods, I not only had the opportunity to assist students throughout the course, but also had the opportunity to develop and implement my own lecture and class assignment. My assignment was geared toward masters students going on to get their doctorate in psychology. This lecture and assignment focused on testing mediation using regression analyses. The students selected a model, or set of variables, they believed would predict significant variance in an outcome measure, then determined the unique variance each variable contributed to the model. Students were then asked to use creative & critical thinking skills to write about how such research might help to shape psychotherapy (i.e., while both intervention A and intervention B might correlate with outcome measure X, multiple regression analysis might show intervention A predicts little variance in measure X when controlling for intervention B. Consequently, intervention B might be preferred in psychotherapy practice; the outcome measure is better predicted by intervention B).

This was a summer internship during my college education; I wanted some experience in the field of business and IntellaCore wanted a psychologically-minded intern for the summer's marketing campaign. My position entailed developing short but informative web-based videos that maintained the core values and mission of the company while driving potential consumers of IntellaCore's products to their website. With this campaign, we saw website hits rise noticeably, while also paying attention to data on which means of dispersing the videos were most efficient. This allowed myself and IntellaCore to develop best-practices for web-based advertising and SEO improvement for the companies particular market. Additionally, I reviewed literature written by the CEO and and helped to develop conversion approaches - ways to ensure we stay in contact with potential customers - after the CEO presented at various local community business associations.
