About Jordan Burns

I am a recent PhD graduate in Materials Science and Engineering from UC Berkeley with eight years of experience with scientific data modeling in Python, working with large databases like the Materials Project, app development (I coded the Reaction Calculator and the Redox Thermo CSP apps on the Materials project website https://next-gen.materialsproject.org) and Machine Learning. My PhD work primarily involved computational simulations of Li-ion batteries. I speak Spanish, German, French and some Mandarin. In terms of advocacy, I have a passion for cities and push for walk/rollable neighborhoods, affordable housing, safe streets and quality public transportation.

I am the Bass player for the indie rock band Casachanclas. I create content and help manage our Instagram, Tiktok and Youtube Accounts. I communicate with venues and other artists to organize, set up and advertise our concerts. https://www.instagram.com/casachanclas/
  • Self-Employed
    Private Tutor
    Self-Employed Jan 2017 - Present
    Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
I have tutored all ages in subjects including Math, the Sciences, Spanish, and German.
  • Berkeley Lab
    Software Engineer
    Berkeley Lab May 2024 - Sep 2024
    Berkeley, California, United States
I worked with scientists to develop interactive data visualization apps for their research using Plotly Dash on the Materials Project (materialsproject.org). I primarily worked in Python, but also coded in HTML, CSS and Javascript in this role. This position combined my programming skills, my scientific knowledge and my sense of design and user interface. I left this job when I moved to Vancouver.
  • Berkeley Lab
    Graduate Research Assistant
    Berkeley Lab Aug 2018 - May 2023
    Berkeley, Ca
I was a graduate student in Kristin Persson's research group. I began studying CO2 reduction catalysts but moved into surface studies of cobalt-free lithium Ion battery cathodes. My work was mostly programming oriented using Python, Bash scripting and the Vienna Ab initio Simulation Package (VASP) to run atomic simulations of next generation battery materials. I regularly worked with large data sets and employed data modeling and machine learning techniques with pandas, numpy and scikit-learn. I also contributed to large code bases such as coding the Reaction Calculator and RedoxThermoCSP apps on the Materials Project website (https://next-gen.materialsproject.org/). I gave regular presentations to our group, project team and funding agency to keep my communication skills sharp. During my graduate studies, I also minored in Data Science and City Planning. I was on three peer-reviewed publications in this role which are available on my LinkedIn page.
  • Fraunhofer Ise
    Research Assistant
    Fraunhofer Ise May 2018 - Aug 2018
    Freiburg Area, Germany
My work comprised building coin cell batteries in the lab and analyzing them using Impedance Spectroscopy. I then investigated the effect of different separator materials on the resistance of the batteries using the impedance data collected and I wrote an interactive python script to speed up the data analysis. I also helped others work on their projects from assembling pouch cells, electroplating and use of computational electrochemistry tools. I appear as a third author on a paper from some of the work I did in this position. I worked and presented in both German and English in this position.
  • University Of California, Berkeley
    Researcher
University Of California, Berkeley Jun 2017 - Mar 2018
    Berkeley, Ca
Using molecular dynamics simulations and second and third order elastic constants calculated with Python and Mathematica scripts, we analyzed screw dislocations in titanium metal. Image processing and machine learning were used to create a statistical mechanics model of the dislocation cores to obtain a more nuanced picture of how these materials deform and fracture.
  • University Of California, Berkeley
    Research Assistant
University Of California, Berkeley Jun 2016 - Dec 2017
    Berkeley, Ca
I helped develop a bio-compatible stress sensor from gold nano rods and a thermo-responsive polymer. This was a hands-on wet chemistry role for which I did all of the laboratory work.My past projects included researching the fluorescent properties of gold nano clusters under high pressure using Raman spectroscopy in a diamond anvil cell.
  • Vassar College Department Of Chemistry
    Undergraduate Research Assistant
Vassar College Department Of Chemistry Jan 2016 - Jun 2016
    Poughkeepsie, New York, United States
I worked in both the Amber Lab and the Polymer Lab at Vassar College. In the Amber Lab, I ran FTIR and ATR spectroscopy to characterize amber samples. In the polymer lab, I ran TGA and DSC to analyze the thermal properties of synthetic polymers.
  • Vassar College Admissions
    Tour Guide
Vassar College Admissions Sep 2013 - Jun 2016
