About Jordan Carter

Hello! My name is Jordan Carter, and I am a proud Cornell University alum. In December, I earned my bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, complemented by a minor in infectious disease biology. My academic journey has been fueled by an unwavering passion for microbiology, particularly the intricate world of bacteria and viruses. From the moment I stepped onto Cornell’s campus, I knew that my path lay in unraveling the mysteries of these tiny yet formidable organisms. Driven by an insatiable curiosity and an unyielding work ethic, I accelerated my studies and graduated ahead of schedule in December 2023.During my tenure at Cornell, I had the privilege of joining the Aguilar-Carreño Lab, where I am currently immersed in virology research. Within the lab’s dynamic environment, I’ve gotten to work on projects that involve viral cell entry inhibition, working with mice, and creating different strains of pseudoviruses (harmless viruses that contain the cell entry proteins of dangerous viruses). My contributions span from experimental design and execution to data analysis, and I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with brilliant minds who share my fervor for scientific discovery. In the experience section of my profile, you’ll find detailed insights into my research endeavors. From culturing different virus strains to investigating novel antiviral compounds, I’ve honed my skills and gained invaluable insights. My work has reinforced my belief that the battle against infectious diseases requires not only scientific acumen but also unwavering dedication. As I embark on the next phase of my career, I am seeking a position that allows me to leverage the knowledge I’ve amassed over the past four years. My heart lies in antiviral and antibacterial research, where I hope to contribute to groundbreaking advancements. However, I remain open to exploring diverse avenues within the realm of microbiology. The prospect of making a tangible impact on public health drives my enthusiasm, and I eagerly await opportunities that align with my expertise and passion.Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to contributing my skills, energy, and excitement to a team committed to advancing scientific frontiers. Let’s connect and explore how I can be an asset to your organization!

During my time at Cornell University, I performed research within the Aguilar-Carreño lab, contributing to a variety of interesting projects. I’ll briefly discuss 3 of the projects that I had the biggest impact on during my time there. For one of the projects, our aim was to develop a trivalent vaccine that would provide protection against Nipah, Hendra, and Ebola viruses. We utilized a VSV pseudovirus system to create replication-incompetent viruses with the key viral entry proteins from Nipah, Hendra, and Ebola viruses. My role involved performing in-vitro viral entry assays with the serum from vaccinated animals in order to confirm the presence and the efficacy of neutralizing antibodies. Additionally I was also tasked with generating the pseudoviruses that contained the viral entry proteins of Nipah, Hendra, and Ebola for use in said assays.Another project I collaborated on involved testing compounds known as synthetic carbohydrate receptors (SCRs) for their potential as antivirals. I helped screen over 70 of these SCRs to assess their ability to block viral entry into cells. Additionally, I also helped develop a protocol that would help to uncover what cell entry mechanisms the different SCRs inhibited for multiple pseudotyped viruses.I took on a leadership role in the third project, where we aimed to develop a vaccine against different strains of Type 1 Feline Coronavirus. My responsibilities included creating, optimizing, and administering a VSV pseudovirus-based vaccine to 40 different mice. I was also responsible for performing blood draws at 8 different time points for all of the mice and testing the sera from said mice in order to test for neutralizing antibodies.I enjoyed working on all of these projects and I would love to work at a company where I have the opportunity to work on projects that are similar to these. That being said, I am more than open to the idea of working on other projects that focus on different aspects of microbiology.

I was a part of the Dr. Kerri Coon's lab as a part of a summer research program at the University of Wisconsin. While I was there I was responsible for taking care of over 100 mosquitoes through each stage of their life. Additionally, I also verified that cryopreserved mosquito microbiota is capable of being transplanted into and recapitulated in different mosquitoes using high-throughput rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and presented those research findings at the end of the summer internship program.
