As the Teacher's Assistant and Coordinator of the Peer Counseling Program I led the training of prospective peer counselors along with the peer 1 professor. I developed plans for students to finish their psychology major/minor within four years, reviewed student records and honed academic plans to their individual needs, skills, and interests, aided students in the necessary steps required to declare a psychology major or minor, maintained student confidentiality, made necessary referrals to outside departments such as financial aid, general academic advising, career counseling, the health center, etc., maintained vast knowledge of the other departments and resources offered to students both on and off campus such as FAFSA, TAP, the DREAM act, etc., knowledgeable on the requirements to complete a degree in psychology as well as the requirements to graduate from Queens College, knowledgeable in computer systems such as Navigate, DegreeWorks, Cunyfirst (PeopleSoft), maintained student appointments as well as saw walk-in students, and I have experience working fully in-person, fully remote, and within a hybrid setting. Some highlights are I am trained to de-escalate harmful situations, have sessions with walk-in clients, developed the ability to analyze the client's feelings, communication, and body language, as well as my own, I am knowledgeable on the signs and symptoms of serious mental disorders as noted in the DSM-5 such as suicide, depression, and more. Strong interpersonal and intrapersonal skills are used and have been further developed. I consistently maintain confidentiality between counselor and client. I make necessary referrals to other offices based on the client's individual need and provide the client with external resources such as access to health care, food pantry, emergency funds, and more.
