The International Marine Science and Carbon Sequestration (IMARCS) Foundation is a marine science organization based in Japan that benefits the environment through mariculture, with a particular focus on giant clams. Our focus for our initial mariculture project centers on three major environmental and social benefits:1. To store carbon in giant clam shells using a novel approach, which, due to their size and symbiotic relationship with algae, can be quite significant - and permanent.2. To provide food security for the most vulnerable people in Asia, as well as others in need of a sustainable source of protein.3. To increase giant clam numbers, as they are considered threatened and have become endangered or locally extinct from large areas of their natural habitats; this leads to biodiversity conservation and preservation for not only the clams, but also all the reef species that benefit from an increased presence of these gentle giants.
