When I was working at the BGE compressor station in Dumfries & Galloway I was brought in to help wire and terminate cables for control modules for each of the turbines in each compressor. Each cable run was over 250m and there were four 10mm 3 core SWA cables per turbine. Transits were installed for cable entry into the buildings and cables were glanded to ATEX standards and terminated according to the drawings.

In my present workplace I co-ordinate with two operatives from other companies. We carry out equipment checks and tests while also carrying out cable checks and tests. I oversee the work being done and see if it is carried out properly. I also carryout inspections on ATEX equipment and see if it is up to standard required. If I am happy with the quality of the work and that the equipment is undamaged, in a suitable zone, the certification is correct, and so on, I will give the equipment a HAE (Hazardous Area Equipment check). The same applies for the cable. If I am happy that the cable is terminated properly and not damaged I will do an ICAP and record it. If the cable or equipment is not up to a good standard it will be replaced and/or installed again to make sure it is acceptable. To find all instruments and cables it benefits that we work together as a team and are able to cross reference drawings.

I work for the mechanical and electrical department of Morris & Spottiswood mainly on big projects, for example The Bank of New York. The work usually consists of a big strip out, installation of containment, wiring, commissioning, inspection and testing services.Permits to work, particularly at The Bank of New York, had to be obtained everyday before using power tools to cut rods material on site.

I worked at HF electrical for two years and gained experience on fire alarms, commercial installations, industrial installations, installations in hazardous areas and inspection and testing.

At Maintenance, Controls and Engineering Scotland Ltd we would install control circuits for HVAC systems. We would also install a control panel on site that was constructed, wired and terminated in the panel shop.
